Eagle Lake Rainbow Bite Sizzles

SPAULDING – Trout fishing at this natural lake in Lassen County near Susanville is “ the best it ’ s been in 25 years ,” according to Cal Kellogg . “ I caught 10 fish both days while fishing with my cousin Tom McCleary , said Kellogg . “ We were fishing from kayaks on the south end of the lake . The fish were near shore at 12 to 15 feet deep and ranged from 3 to 5 pounds . The best spot was right off Camp Ronald McDonald . We caught everything on my orange trolling flies and lead core line .” “ I ’ ve never before caught five fish over 5 pounds like I did on the latest trip ,” he said . “ The top fish were between 21 and 24 inches . These fish provided epic battles – they fought and looked like steelhead .” It was a dry , cold 23 degrees in the morning and got into low forties in the afternoon . The surface water temperature was 48 degrees . Kellogg advised using caution at the boat ramp because of ice .

Aniyah and Fred Tinsley teamed up to catch this rainbow at Collins Lake , which is receiving 8,000 pounds of rainbow trout plants this fall .
