BERKELEY- There are options aplenty for East Bay charter boaters . Inside the bay potluck , live bait trips are yielding lots of stripers and halibut . Beyond the Golden Gate salmon are the main target , but rockfish and lingcod are starting to provide solid fishing too .

salmon . Most recent days have produced limits of kings and the slower days are producing near limits . The last several days read like this : 20 limits , 28 salmon to 20 pounds for 20 anglers , 18 pounds , 22 limits to 25 pounds , 22 limits to 20 pounds and 30 salmon to 22 pounds for 23 anglers . If you want kings , now is the time to jump aboard the New Easy Rider !

On the live bait scene , Berkeley ’ s Happy Hooker With Captains Chris and Jonathan Smith behind the wheel has been focused on halibut and bass fishing in the central bay with solid results . When tides are large stripers outnumber the halibut , but on days with slowing tides the halibut bite comes on strong .

On the Hooker ’ s last trip their anglers rounded up 22 bass , 4 lingcod and halibut to an impressive 28 pounds !

The Goldeneye 2000 with Captain Quang in the wheelhouse has been focused primarily on halibut and bass drifting within the bay with excellent results , but they also ran out to the island in search of big rockfish and lingcod . The bottom fish action has been excellent producing limits of rockfish and some dandy lings that range up to 20 pounds .

Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon Sportfishing has been doing a little bit of everything from the deck of his 6 pack boat over the past week . On his most recent live bait trip his 2 anglers nailed 4 halibut to 15 pounds , 1 leopard shark and a couple keeper stripers .

On the 4th of July Mullins ran a shark fishing trip that produced a number of sharks including a huge 200 pound seven gill .

Captain James Smith of the California Dawn in Berkeley has been stacking up lots of fish while drifting live anchovies . His most recent trip produced about 2 keeper fish per rod on a mix of stripers , halibut and lingcod , while fishing both inside and outside the Golden Gate .

Salmon Vastly Improves With Rockfish & Lingcod Remaining Outstanding

BODEGA BAY - Salmon fishing is breaking out in Bodega Bay , and there have been some impressive counts displayed at the end of June into the beginning of July . Rockfishing remains tremendous both north and south of the harbor , and as July progresses , the salmon will be moving closer to the shorelines .

Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing and the New Sea Angler said , “ I think salmon fishing will only get better and better as we are finding salmon on krill

in 42 fathoms . On Wednesday , July 5th , we took a combination trip with 14 anglers to 22 salmon to 22 pounds , 6 lingcod to 13 pounds , and 110 rockfish . We took another combination trip the next day with 26 fishermen for 8 salmon to 27 pounds along with full limits of assorted rockfish and 13 lings to 12 pounds .

“ Earlier in the week , we worked Point Reyes for 33 limits of lingcod to 20 pounds along with near-limits of rockfish consisting of all of the bottomgrabbers : copper , chinas , vermilions , browns , and quillbacks ,” he stated . “ We are working for the rockfish in the morning before changing over for salmon . This has been good combo fishing , and I am looking forward to the salmon action this month . We went north to Fort Ross on Sunday for 29 lings and limits of rockfish for nearly 30 fishermen .

July is generally go-time for Bodega Bay salmon as the schools will move into the coastline before turning the corner towards San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River .

Salmon Trollers Lay Into Hard- Fighting Kings

SAN FRANCISCO – King salmon fishing outside the Golden Gate has been good , but the action has varied greatly from day to day .

On Thursday , July 6 , the 12 anglers aboard the Bass Tub for a half day trip landed full limits of beautiful salmon to 15 pounds . They trolled with anchovies at 30 to 40 feet deep off Pacifica .

On the next day , the wind came up and boating the fish got tougher . “ The anglers landed 5 Chinooks to 25 pounds , but lost 14 fish right at the boat ,” said Erik Anfinson ,

Cassandra DeBra of Sacramento showed this big lingcod who was boss during a recent trip out of Bodega Bay .

On Saturday , July 8 , the boat came in with 2 / 3 limits of rockfish and 4 lingcod after going to Duxbury Reef . “ Then we came into the calmer waters of the bay and one angler caught a striped bass ,” said Anfinson .

HALF MOON BAY

King Salmon Action Explodes North Of Harbor

EL GRANADA - Salmon fishing broke out north of the harbor within the past week , and the party boats are finding solid action for both salmon and rockfish .

Out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing , the Queen of Hearts and Riptide have been focusing on rockfishing , and the Riptide brought in 17 limits of rockfish and 6 lings on Saturday with the Queen scoring ½ limits of rockfish and 14 lings to 16 pounds . The top locations for rockfish have been the recently-opened waters of the Deep Reef along with Pescadero and Pigeon Point . Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete said , “ All you have to do is produce salmon , and people will come out of the woodwork . There are salmon showing up from Pedro Point to Thornton Beach , and also outside of our harbor inside of the Green Buoys and along both sides of the reefs . Private boaters and even kayaks in Hobie fishing kayaks are finding action outside of the reef since a wall of bait has been showing up .”
