FISHERMAN’S WHARF
Live Bait Drifters Pull In Halibut, Stripers
SAN FRANCISO - The San Francisco Bay Area
saltwater fishing scene started late this season because
of the COVID 19 pandemic, but once it started in May,
both trolling for salmon outside of the Golden Gate for
salmon and live bait drifting for striped bass and halibut
inside San Francisco Bay has been epic.
The Bass Tub has been switching back and forth
between ocean salmon and bay fishing. The most recent
charter of 11 anglers aboard the Bass Tub finished the
day with 23 halibut and 13 bass on a live bait adventure
inside the bay.
“We drifted live anchovies at 20 feet deep in the Central
Bay,” said Aaron Anfinson, Captain of the Bass Tub. “The
halibut averaged 5 pounds each, and the biggest one
went 12 pounds. The stripers were schoolies averaging
around 4 pounds.”
On the day before, the 12 anglers fishing aboard the

boat returned with limits of kings salmon while trolling
outside of the Golden Gate. The previous trip produced
limits of salmon averaging 12 pounds.
Up until recently, the best fishing was off the Marin
County coast, but lately the boats have going south of the
S Buoy off the San Mateo County coast.

HALF MOON BAY
Salmon Action Rebounds Between
Buoys and Deep Reef
EL GRANADA - The salmon action was at an apex south of
the harbor with party boats out of the Golden Gate and Half
Moon Bay making the run only 8 miles southwest
of the harbor for limits of salmon for those needing
numbers. However, private boaters have been
finding action outside of the harbor between the
Red and Green Buoys with limits possible.
Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain
Pete said, “The buoys have been going on for
the past few days for the six packs and the
private boats while all of the large party boats
are running 8 miles southwest of the harbor for
limits. The commercial fleet has also focused
on the area southwest of the harbor. There
are spots of jelly in close, but the whales and
anchovy schools are thick only 3 miles out.”
“The squid boats have changed their nets to
anchovies since the schools are so thick right now,
and things are really looking good down here. We
put in 12 limits of salmon in short order on our
last trip, and the Bay Area boats did the same.
The commercial boats are working as far south as
Pigeon Point so there is a wide area of salmon off
of our coastline. The private boats and kayaks are
particularly excited about the action so close to the
harbor between the buoys,” Baxter stated.
Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat has been
heading down to the Deep Reef after posting
7 big salmon in the early morning between the
buoys on a previous trip, and they posted quality
salmon to 15 pounds trolling in 200 feet of water.
Out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing, the
Queen of Hearts is running either rockfish or
salmon trips for a reduced group of 10 anglers
on the 50-foot boat at $170 for rockfish and
$200 for salmon.
The Pacifica Municipal Pier reopened on June
17th after being closed for three months due
to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The
city completed multiple repairs to the municipal
pier, also known as the Rev. Herschell Harkins
Memorial Pier, while it was closed. Repairs
included power-washing its rails, benches,
drinking fountains and deck; filling holes in the
pier deck; rehabilitating the men’s and women’s
restrooms; repainting rule and regulation signs
and replacing the tabletops and plumbing at the pier’s fish
cleaning station.
City officials warned that the two facilities could be
closed again if residents don’t follow health and safety
requirements like wearing face coverings and maintaining
at least six feet of distance. The pier will be open from 4
p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

rockfish and good numbers of lingcod, but the salmon
fishing remains tough in Monterey Bay.
A trip by the Kahuna sportfishing boat on Saturday,
