generally considered sparse,. I have often
said you have to troll deep and be patient.
Well, I was listening to Bob Simms on
KFBK and heard Robbie Dunham of Koke
Machine Guide Service talking about how
he and Kim caught a double limit before
10am.
Now they were trolling Speedy Shiners
down around 35 ft. to 45 ft. toward the
dam, which is typically what I would
advise in the summer heat, but Robbie
was kind enough to get specific; he was
on the water at opening and he said they
caught just about every fish before the
sun hit the water.
If you’re camping here and want to hit
the trout hard, get a line in the water by 5
am. And don’t forget to send your photos
and stories to fishing@collinslake.com

DAVIS LAKE
Bank Anglers Battle Trout,
Bass and Catfish
PORTOLA – Rainbows and an
occasional brown trout continue to be
caught from the bank on garlic rainbow
PowerBait at Lake Davis, in spite of the
summer heat.
“It isn’t red hot, but most anglers are
catching two to three trout per trip towards
the dam and off the point at Grasshopper,”
said Jeanne Graham of J & J’s Grizzly
Store and Camping Resort. “The fish are
ranging from 14 to 22 inches long.
She noted that they are having to deal
with some smoke and haze, but the fires
ranging throughout California “are well
away from us.”
Trollers are marking fish, but fishing has
been tough for them, with maybe 1 to 2
fish per boat reported.
“Bass fishing continues to be good
for anglers fishing frogs, Rat-L-Traps,
Rooster Tails and nightcrawlers all
over the lake,” said Graham. “Danny
Hernandez caught one bass and one trout
while fishing a streamer in his kayak for
just an hour on a recent trip.”
For catfish, throw nightcrawlers off
Fairview and Eagle Point. The brown
bullheads are 1 to 2 pounds each.
Lake Davis is holding 56,712 acre feet
of water, 68 percent of capacity and 94
percent of average.
There will not be an Annual Lake Davis
Fishing Derby 2020. “After checking with
the powers that be – in this case the
Plumas County Health Department, we
have not been granted the necessary
permits due to COVID-19,” noted Graham.
Planning Ahead: The “Maybe Ice Derby”
is scheduled for February 13, 2021. The
“Annual Father’s Day Weekend Derby” is
scheduled for June 19, 2021.

EAGLE LAKE
Early Morning Trollers Smack
‘Bows!
SPALDING - Not much has changed
over the past two weeks. We are still
landing limits of very nice fish from 2
1/2 to 3 1/2 lbs. I am launching at 5 and
trolling by 5:15. More fish are cruising
near the surface and working the bait balls
in 20-30 feet of water EARLY.
There are fishing working the surface
before sunrise and have caught fish
trolling as shallow as 7 feet deep at
this time of the morning. These fish are
feeding on Tui Chub minnows which are
moving away from shore and out into the
main body of Eagle Lake.
The shallow water bite is over by 7 AM.
After this we are moving to water 40-45
feet deep and trolling spoons at 15-25
feet.

of techniques including: big worms,
crankbaits, chatterbaits, topwater lures,
frogs, and by flipping Senkos. There were
three large tournaments on the Delta
during the past week, and the average
winning limits ranged from 19 to 29
pounds.
The Delta was busy with only 65 boats
in the FLW Toyota Delta Series from
Wednesday through Friday, and Ish
Monroe of Oakdale ended up on top of
the three-day event, lapping the field
by nearly 16.5 pounds with a total of 65
pounds, 13 ounces. His largest fish came
in at over 7 pounds with his River2Sea
Phat Mat Daddy Frog, but he also found
good action by punching the weeds with
Missle’s D-Bombs in peanut butter and
jelly on a 1.25 to 1.75 River2Sea Trash
Bomb using 70-pound braid to work
through the thick matts of milfoil combined
with water hyacinth.
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor
and director of Best Bass Tournaments,
hosted 95 boats on Saturday out of
Russo’s Marina, and he said, “The Delta
was excellent with only a handful of boats
not weighing in, and one of these was
stuck on a sandbar out of Eddo’s Marina.
There is an excellent bite with crankbaits
or chatterbaits in crawdad patterns as the
bass are loading up on the crayfish.”
“We put in 18.25 pounds on a guide trip
this week working the ima Rock N’Vibe
Suspend, the Pinjack, or the Squarebill
crankbaits in Hot Craw. We also picked up
bass on weightless worms or on the dropshot,
and downsizing seemed to make the
difference. There has been tremendous
boat traffic in the south and central Delta,
and it is important to get out there early.
There is a small window for topwater with
the El Choppo on the high tide until the
switch over the weed beds along with
the ima Finesse Popper in the pockets
between weeds or tules,” stated Pringle.
In the south Delta, Johnny Tran
of New Romeo’s Bait and Tackle in
Freeport reported a solid bluegill bite
west of Stockton from the shorelines
off of Eight Mile Road, but a drop-shot
rig is necessary as the panfish have
dropped in the water column. Red worms,
minicrawlers, or jumbo red worms are all
working.
