VOL.39 • ISS. 20 Hit The Rough Country For Public Land Bucks Continued from pg 6 on the duration of your trip. For this type of hunting I prefer a large high quality external frame pack. An internal frame works fine for hauling gear, but the hunter also needs to be prepared for packing meat and this is much easier with an external frame pack. Beyond the pack you’ll need a small stove, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, dehydrated meals, water purification pump and your standard hunting gear such as your weapon, binoculars, knife, bone saw, tags and hunting license. If you aren’t up for a multiple day or even overnight backcountry adventure you can day hike into either designated wilderness areas or rough roadless areas. Day hiking generally means that you’ll only be working around the edge of roadless areas, but that’s okay. Remember, most hunters stay within a mile of their vehicles. Spend 90 minutes and hike in a mile or two and you’ll be all alone most of the time. Now that I’m well into my 40’s this is my preferred type of backcountry hunting. I still bring a pack frame along for this type of hunting, but I leave it in my truck except for when I’ve got a buck to pack out of a canyon. When I head out for a day of hunting, I carry a large soft daypack. The pack contains my standard hunting gear, but it also holds game bags, rope and emergency survival kit and enough food and water for two days in the field. Basically I intend to return to camp every night, but I have all the gear I need to spend a night in the field if the situation arises. When I get a buck on this sort of hunt I butcher it in place and hang the quarters. If I tag the buck early in the day I’ll generally have it packed out by dark. If I tag a deer late, I generally leave it hang overnight and return for it the next day. Hunting Journal 3619 Sept 25, 2020 Got The Itch To Trigger Off A Few Rounds?
