to the Caples Lake Resort. “The launch
is open to the public and we will have our
rental boats available for limited use.”
“We got our first plant of the season -
2000 pounds of very nice brown trout.
Trollers have picked up some quality
mackinaw and fishing from the shore is
picking up,” the resort stated.
“We will be opening up our lodging in
coming weeks as we work to implement
new industry guidelines for your health
and safety. We will be reducing the
number of cabins available and adjusting
our minimum stays and occupancy levels
in an effort to make things as safe as
possible,” the resort added.
Fishing is “pretty good” for recently
planted German browns at Lower Bear
River Reservoir said Mike Raso at the
Bear River Lake Resort.
“Most of the fish are small; we haven’t
seen any big browns, mackinaw or
rainbows since the lake opened on May
15.,” stated Raso. “The CDFW planted
11,500 browns weighing a total of 3,500
pounds before the opener. Bank anglers

“Fishing has been good,” said Ed
Palma of the Collins Lake Resort. “Lots of
trout are being taken by trollers and there
is a ton of bass activity. Trout are moving
off shore, so most are catching trolling at
about 25′. If you

the dam. Self-reported the fish weighed 9
pounds.
“On the weekends the lake has been
very busy with boats and day use to the
point where we had to shut down Day Use
last Saturday,” said Palma. “Folks want to
get outside and who could blame them.
Avoid the heaviest crowds by coming
Monday-Thursday.”
Collins Lake reopened to the public on
May 4 and families have been enjoying
being outdoors since then.
The number of Day Use vehicles will be
more limited to maintain social distancing
requirements. Once the park occupancy
reaches those limits each day, Day Use

entry will be turned away until
occupancy reduces sufficiently
to maintain social distancing
within the park shoreline.
“This is practicing social
distancing in a healthy way,”
according to the resort.
“Thanks for being respectful
and flexible; thanks for helping
us stay open.”
DAVIS LAKE
Take Your Pick of
Trout, Bass or Catfish
PORTOLA – The fishing is
excellent for an array of fish
species, including rainbow
trout, largemouth bass and
catfish, at Lake Davis.
“Bank anglers are nailing
trout up to 27 inches while
fishing worms and PowerBait
at Mallard Cove and Camp Five,” said
Jim Graham of the J&J Grizzly Store and
Campground Resort. “Trollers are also
doing well on trout while using Dick Nites
and Baby Simons in red dot frog about 15
to 20 feet deep still around Big Island.”
Bass fishing is also superb with fish
up to 5 pounds caught in Catfish Cove.
“One troller also hooked a 3-1/2 lb. bass,”
reported Graham. “He thought it was a log
until it took off.”
True to its name, Catfish Cove is also
yielding good numbers of brown bullhead
catfish to anglers fishing nightcrawlers
and prepared catfish baits.

Caples Lake: Trout Fishing Fun On
The Crest Of The Sierras!
Some trout fishing destinations offer superb
angling, others offer exceptional scenery, still
others boast both. Caples Lake, setting near the crest of
Sierras is near the top of this list providing both lights
out fishing for rainbows, browns, brook trout and
macks and breath taking high country views. Unlike
many lakes this year, Caples is nearly full, making it
an especially attractive destination for trout enthusiasts
this fall.
Caples Lake encompasses about 600 surface acres
when at full capacity, setting at an elevation of 7,806
feet near Carson Pass. Unlike many of the Sierra’s high
country trout lakes that
require stout
hiking
boots or
four
wheel drive vehicles to access them, Caples offers easy access to
both bank anglers and boaters.
Highway 88 traces the entire northern shoreline of Caples,
offering bank anglers excellent opportunities mere feet from the
pavement. For the boating fraternity, the lake boasts a pair of
launch ramps, one is private at Caples Lake Resort and the other
public administered by the U.S. Forest Service.
Caples Lake Resort Now Open
Caples Lake Resort serves as the prefect headquarters for the
entire family to enjoy the lake and the surrounding country.
In addition to 9 cabins and a 6 B & B Lodge Rooms the resort
boasts a launch ramp, store, marina, guest dock, rental powerboats,
kayaks and canoes. Guests at the resort not only have easy
access to the lake, but they can explore extensive hiking trails
during the summer and cross country skiing and snowshoeing
trails during the winter.
