VOL.39 • ISS. 13 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 19 RIO VISTA cont. so we switched over to trolling deep and shallow and we lost count of fish we hooked,” said Ditter, who is now targeting Lake Tahoe mackinaw. “We knocked ‘em dead and left the bite hot.” His final striper trip produced limits of stripers to 5-12 pounds, but the weeds were a problem. “We hooked all of the fish on the Sacramento River below Rio Vista,” said Ditter. After top-notch striper fishing over the past few weeks, James Netzel of Tight Lines Gudie Service is also headed to the higher elevations. “Well, that’s a wrap for spring striper season. It’s too darn hot for me down here and time to head for the hills. I’m Stampede bound after I get the boat cleaned, switched out, and maybe hit Folsom a couple of times,:” Netzel concluded.. Largemouth bass fishing is going strong in the North Delta, according to Alan Fong, manager of the Fishermen’s Warehouse in Sacramento. His fishing partner, Warren Trumbley, caught and released a 9 lb. largemouth bass while flipping with a Senko. “There are still a lot of small male striped bass in the systems,” he added. “Throwing swimbaits in the North Delta continues to work for stripers.” - Dan Bacher SACRAMENTO AREA Shore Anglers, Boaters Battle American Shad SACRAMENTO – American shad offer the most consistent piscatorial sport in the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area at this time. “People are doing best fishing shad darts from boat and shore in the river from the I Street Bridge to the mouth of the American,” said Dennis Pfanner of Sacramento Pro Tackle. “The Miller Park and Freeport areas also continue to produce shad.” Anglers are also picking up shad on the American while using jig heads with chartreuse and pink grubs in the Ancil Hoffman Park and Sunrise areas.” Striper fishing depends on who you talk to. “Some report doing well, while others report doing poorly,” said Pfanner. “The top area to fish is from the I Street Bridge to above the Interstate Five Bridge. The best baits are bloodworms, pileworms, shad, anchovies and sardines.” Jay Rowan, CDFW Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, reported, “We are continuing to plant trout, but have cancelled all the fishing in the city events, and may cancel some plants in very small waters that if planted may make it difficult to follow social distance guidelines. We are also trying our best to identify any waters that are being closed to the public so we don’t plant those.” For more information, call the Fishing in the City - Sacramento Metro Area Information line: (916) 358-2872, or email r2fishinginthecity@wildlife. ca.gov - Dan Bacher FRESHWATER SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES/ SAN LUIS RESERVOIR Calero, Coyote and Stevens Creek Reservoir Open to Boating COYOTE – Boating is now permitted at Calero, Coyote Lake and Stevens Creek (non-power boating only) County Parks with a reservation. Calero Reservoir is producing the top bass fishing at this time for anglers using drop shot rigs, wacky rigs, NED rigs and nightcrawlers, according to Madison at Coyote Bait and Tackle. The crappie fishing was good, but has slowed down lately. Most of the fish are in the 1-1-1/2 lb. range, with some larger fish mixed in. “The water level at Coyote Reservoir has also risen and the lake is open to boating,” said Madison. “Some crappie are hitting small jigs at night, but the fishing is slow. Bass are hitting the same lures used at Calero, but jigs are working also. The bass have moved into deep water with warming water temperatures.” Shore anglers are picking up bass at Anderson Reservoir. The lake is low and the lake will be drained by October, she noted. visit LAKE CAMANCHE World-Class Trout & Bass Fishing, year round! 2 for 1 CAMPING Camp one night at Lake Camanche and receive your second night free. At Whiskeytown Reservoir the kokanee bite is fair to good. “I fished Shasta a few days ago and we had a very productive trip that resulted in some very nice rainbows,” reported G one Fishin’ Marine offers a lot of different boat lines. In fact, if it floats there is a pretty good chance you’ll find it at Gone Fishin’s Dixon headquarters. Here in the Sacramento Valley, Gone Fishin’ Marine is an official Tracker Boat dealer. Tracker Boats are among the most rugged fishing machines on the water. Beneath the surface of every Tracker Mod V and Deep V boat is a full-length longitudinal stringer system, which provides the backbone of support for the hull running surface below and the deck above. Aluminum extrusions, for extra strength and rigidity, are welded in a chevron pattern along both sides of the bow and serve to distribute the energy produced by crashing through waves. Welded, heavy-duty box beams and formed parts make up the stringer, a ladder-like frame that extends further into the hull than on most June 12, 2020 27 Ray Gifford of Corning. “The trout are still pretty spread out. I started the day in Digger Bay. We got two chunky rainbows there. When the wind started blowing we headed up to O’Brien Inlet on the Sacramento and got into more quality rainbows. The top fish was a 3.5 pounder that measured 22 inches. The two hot set ups were a watermelon Apex trolled behind a Sling Blade or a white Wiggle Hoochie trolled in back of a Sling Blade. The hot depth was 25 feet.” A lot of Shasta’s bass have completed spawning, but you can still find bedded fish. The most exciting action is taking place early and late for anglers tossing Spooks, poppers and other topwater lures. Throughout out the day, 4 and 6 inch natural colored worms work great. 30 to 50 bass days are possible for anglers that enjoy dragging worms. As of press time Shasta was 36 feet from maximum pool and rising a bit. At Whiskeytown kokanee fishing remains a great option. The lake is full and boating a limit of 12 to 14 inch kokanee is easy most days. Apex Lures and spinners teamed with dodgers do the trick. Orange and pink are the best colors. LAKE SONOMA Boat Ramp and Marina Now Open GEYSERVILLE - – Lake Sonoma reopened to boaters on May 16 and anglers are now targeting landlocked steelhead, black bass, panfish and channel catfish at the reservoir. “The Public Boat Ramp and Marina for lake surface are open now,” according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The stringer is securely welded to the transom, along the hull sides and into the bow.
