They fished out of Morro Bay in about 200 feet of water 160 on the wire . The fish fell prey to a watermelon color Apex lure . Salmon season got off to a great start in the Central Coast area and continues to be good . Most anglers are trolling a variety of lures for them . & Salmon derby is back ! Because of the covid 19 pandemic , the spring derby was cancelled last year after 17 consecutive years . The spring derby is put on by Kokanee Power in conjunction with the Shasta Lake Business Owners association . It is a two day derby that features a first prize of $ 2000 ( based on at least 200 anglers ), plus cash and prizes paid all the way down to 25th place . The derby is based in Lakehead on the Sacramento River arm of the lake , and the weigh in happens at Basshole and Brews on Lakeshore Drive . The Spring Derby has prizes for rainbow trout , brown trout , king

salmon , and new this year , kokanee salmon . Kokanee were planted in the lake last fall and are already being caught by anglers targeting them . You can fish anywhere on Shasta Lake and target any of the mentioned species . The Shasta Lake Derby is a very fun event that we have attended since the very beginning . It is a great group of anglers and a wonderful get together on a beautiful lake . Most years there is a Derby Dinner and raffle to support Kokanee power . But this year , in deference to Covid 19 rules , there won ’ t be a dinner . The money that is usually spent on raffle prizes and the cost of the dinner will instead be put directly into the prize pot .

There is a 4 fish weigh in per team , per day . You can weigh in only one brown trout and two king salmon per day in your total catch . The $ 150 entry fee includes both days of fishing , plus a Special Gift and Bonus Pots for rainbows , browns , king salmon and kokanee .
