Trout Anglers Need Patience !

CHESTER - Lake level has peaked at 4483 ’ we will begin seeing a drop in water level soon . This past week ’ s 90 + degree weather raised water temps into the 70 ’ s . We will see a cooling trend this week with day time highs in the low 60 ’ s and overnight lows in the thirty ’ s . We are also scheduled to receive winds early in the week . Clarity is hovering between 10-15 feet .

The Hex hatch has begun with small hatches taking place around the dam and along the West Shore it will be a few days before we see prolific hatches and it will take some time for the fish to key in on the hatches as well , the hatch and bite will only improve from here .

The bite remains tough for trollers as fish continue to feast on insects . There continues to be no rhyme or reason to the fish caught , you have an equal chance of catching fish trolling fast , slow or anything in between . Hamilton Branch remains your best shot from shore . There has been lots of pressure around Red Bank , that water is between 20-30 ’ deep and catching has been sporadic at best . Bass fishermen are picking up quality smallies shallow early moving into deeper water as the sun comes up . Boats are beginning to search for fish throughout the lake with Big Springs , A-Frame , Peninsula and the East Shore seeing some pressure .

Traffic has picked up at both USFS boat ramps and the ramps get busy late morning and early afternoon . Most of our campgrounds with some operating at half capacity . Call ahead to insure availability .

Trolling Adventure Yields Trout and Bass !

that produced great results . The woman trolling with Dunham not only landed a limit of cutbow trout to 4 pounds , but she caught 5 largemouth bass to 6 pounds .

“ Her husband had passed away and she wanted to learn how to operate the downriggers on the 20 foot Duckworth boat that they owned ,” said Dunham . “ We kept the five trout and released four bass , but we had to keep one bass since it swallowed the lure and the hook broke its gill .”

She landed all of the fish while trolling with Speedy Shiners at 20 to 35 feet deep from the dam to Jackson Creek . The surface water temperature was 73 degrees .

“ We had the lake all to ourselves except one other boat ,” he added . “ She said the trip was one of the best fishing trips she had ever experienced in a boat .”

Mackinaw and Kokanee Are Biting at Union Valley Reservoir

AUBURN – If you want to catch mackinaw and kokanee in the Crystal Basin , Union Valley Reservoir is a solid prospect .

“ Trolling for mackinaws is good right now ,” said Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle . “ Boaters are hooking macks to 9 pounds while trolling nightcrawlers behind dodgers .” “ The kokanee are hitting hoochies and spinners , tipped with white corn , behind dodgers at 25 to 35 feet deep ,” he stated . For a mixture of rainbows and browns , can also toss out nightcrawlers , Power Eggs , Kastmasters and Rapalas in the low waters of French Meadows Reservoir .

AMERICAN RIVER / SACRAMENTO AREA

Bureau Raises Nimbus Release to 1750 cfs

SACRAMENTO – The Bureau of Reclamation raised releases to the American River below Nimbus Dam from 1250 cfs to 1750 cfs on June 4 for “ Delta Outflow ” purposes , according to T . Washburn , Reclamation spokesperson .

Shad fishing remains productive , but the run is starting to wind down . Alan Fong of Fisherman ’ s Warehouse reported that the best section to target shad is between Howe and Watt Avenue .

“ My brother and my sister-in-law found very good fishing there on his latest trip in his boat ,” said Fong . “ They reported catching over 40 shad while fishing pink grubs .”

The shad fishing has tapered off , but there “ still plenty of fish to catch ” for anglers wading and shore fishing with pink and chartreuse grubs on 1 / 16 to 1 / 32 oz . jigheads on the lower American River , said Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle .

“ Anglers are still catching shad throughout the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area , but many people have switched over to fishing crappie in local ditches , sloughs and lakes ,” reported Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle . “ Some of the better spots for shad are the Water Tower , Miller Park , Garcia Bend and Verona . Bank anglers are doing best tossing out 1 / 32 oz . jigheads with pink and chartreuse grub tails . Boaters are catching the shad on Sabiki rigs with # 6 and # 8 hooks .”
