RIO VISTA AREA
Largemouth Bass Fishing Picks Up in North Delta
RIO VISTA – Black bass fishing has been very good in the North Delta in the Prospect Slough area , according to Alan Fong , manager of Fisherman ’ s Warehouse in Sacramento .
“ Three of us caught and released over 20 largemouths ranging from 2 to 4 pounds on my latest trip ,” said Fong . “ The wind was blowing hard , so you could only fish in certain areas .”
“ We concentrated on shallow water on the west side of Liberty Island . We found our top action while using squarebill crankbaits in shad patterns ,” said Fong .
Smallmouth bass fishing is picking up in Miner , Steamboat and Sutter sloughs . Boaters are tossing out crawfish imitation crankbaits and plastic worms to entice the bass .
The striped bass fishing on the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers has slowed down and many guides have switched over to booking trips at Stampede Reservoir , Jackson Meadows , Lake Tahoe and other waters during the summer .
“ We had a red hot striper bite while trolling Yo-Zuris for about half an hour - then fishing was totally dead after that ,” reported James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service on a recent trip before he finished his spring striper season . “ We should have switched to live bait , but we still had a blast till the weeds become a problem .”

SHASTA LAKE
Rainbows , Browns and Quality Kokanee
SHASTA LAKE - Shasta Lake is
producing some good numbers of rainbow and brown trout along with some really good quality Kokanee fishing ! Its interesting to see the number of Kokanee salmon we ’ re catching with semi non traditional techniques . Its great to be able to troll for Kokanee , Kings , and trout using the same gear every day . Its great to be able to hook fish and not know whats coming up to the surface before dipping the net . Most days we ’ re catching three if not four species of fish on Shasta , and sometimes five ! If you are targeting King salmon salmon I would still recommend running dodger / flasher combos with Brads Cut Plugs or the typical fly / squid presentations . The bigger Kings are often caught trolling Trinidad Tackle anchovy bait heads with the green label anchivies . People fishing specifically for Kokanee should have a good selection of Paulina Peak dodgers and micro hoochies tiped with Pautzke Fire Corn soaked in your favorite scent . For rainbows and browns , its hard to beat trolling spoons or spoon / dodger combo ’ s . The Trinidad Tackle Optimizer Jr . spoons are a great size to use right now with all the Shad schooled up over open water . The lake is heating up and we ’ re seeing water temps in the high 70 ’ s by mid day . The water is still pretty cold at the 40 ’ -50 ’ mark and most of the trout and Kokanee
are still hanging out 30 ’ -40 ’ deep . Those depths won ’ t last too much longer and these fish will start to push down as the warm water layer gets deeper throughout the next 4 months or so . We ’ re fishing down in the main body between the I-5 bridge and the dam , but there are still some great Kokanee schools holding up higher in the arms of the lake . Those Kokanee schools will move down into deeper water as the lake drops and the upper arms warm up too much for the Kokanee to hang out in . Everything points to another great summer season on Shasta Lake so now is the time to get your trip scheduled . We ’ ll have 2-3 guides available daily so getting your preferred dates shouldn ’ t be too much trouble . Visit jeffgoodwinfishing . com for more info ! Thank you !

GONE FISHING continued from page 2

Roland and Rolando Aspiras pose with two catfish they landed at Lake Pardee on June 5th .
The RH Seahawk 16 ’ - a nimble and capable fishing machine .
Roland Aspiras poses with his daughter Ava Aspiras holding a barred surfperch caught near Moss Landing on June 4th . of barred surf perch working jerkbaits and Berkley Gulp ! Sandworms . My middle daughter , Ava was eager to reel one in so I handed her the rod on one of the larger fish . She was ecstatic battling the fish in the large swells and swift undertow . I grew up fishing the beach with my parents , fishing from morning to evening , soaked and cold but I remember those days being the best times of my life . It was a definite rite of passage and a proud moment seeing all three of my kids enjoying hours upon hours of cold , breezy and misty conditions on the beach . We left 62 degree weather on Friday morning and arrived in the valley in 92 degree weather but my time off wasn ’ t over . As part of my vacation , a “ penciled in ” plan was to take Saturday and fish with my parents . Recently , I purchased a brand new 2021 16 ’ RH Seahawk from Auburn Outboard Marine in hopes of fulfilling my hopes and dreams to take the wife and kids , and my parents out on the water more often . While the original plan on Saturday was to fish the Delta for striped bass , we ended up going to Lake Pardee to look for a possible kokanee , then stop off in a random cove to soak bait for channel catfish . We gave the kokanee a hard try working Paulina Peak Tackle hoochies behind Sling Blades , hooking three and losing all of them . But all was not lost as the lake ’ s holdover trout kept us entertained throughout the afternoon . We landed three rainbows along with a bonus lightning trout . As the afternoon sun started to tickle the foothills we switched gears to catfish down in the south end of the lake . My parents were eager to land a couple catfish to take home for dinner . The action was slow except for one quick burst of chaos . Two rods were
blasted within 30 seconds of each other . The result was two catfish ; one each for my dad and I . The rest of the evening was quiet and relaxing . I felt content sitting at the bow , watching my parents kick back and enjoy the beautiful evening . The ride back to the ramp was equally as relaxing . Something about looking back on your boat ’ s wake as it cuts through the water has always stuck with me through the years . Its almost symbolic , watching your path being carved through the water as you make your way to your destination . Mental health is hard to talk about . In my case , it was difficult coming to the realization that I needed to seek out whatever it is that will make you feel better . Spending four straight days with my family is what I needed . And I needed to look back and reflect on what was behind me but also look forward to whatever what ’ s next in store in what we call this new life .
