salmon to 20 pounds . The Hulicat has also been booking both rockfish and salmon trips . On July 3 , the Hulicat went rockcod fishing off San Gregorio in 150 ft . of water , reported Captain Michael Cabanas . The 8 anglers landed limits of rockfish . “ Ocean conditions were lightly breezy , with some small rolling swell ,” observed Cabanas . Joseph Furtado from Santa Clara topped the catches with a 5 lb . lingcod caught on a hex bar . First time ocean fisherman Jacob Wells from Morgan Hill also caught a 4 lb . vermilion while using shrimp flies . Cabanas reported 9 salmon for 8 anglers on his latest salmon trip while trolling up north at Duxbury Reef . “ There were some nice big salmon being caught up the coast today , with the biggest 3 coming in at 15-31 pounds ,” Cabanas said . “ We had lots of bait marking , and lots of scratched baits during the day , with a few shakers and more than our fair share of missed opportunities .”

Boaters Battle Kings , Rockfish

SANTA CRUZ - Salmon fishing was decent on Monterey Bay around the Soquel Hole for a few trollers on the weekend of July 3-4 , but mooching remains tough . “ There were some nice fish caught on the west side of the Soquel Hole in 240 feet of water ,” said Todd Fraser of Bayside Marina . “ The best area was around Mulligan Hill in 120-200 feet of water . There were some limits reported from anglers trolling Krippled Anchovies on the bottom .” The halibut fishing was “ not bad ” near Capitola and the harbor ; the main problem is that there are a bunch of kingfish and dog sharks in the area , reported Fraser . “ The rockfishing was good on the west side of Santa Cruz in 80-120 feet of water . The wind was calm and the swell is still small ,” he added . The 19 anglers aboard the Kahuna landed limits of rockfish and 9 lingcod to 15 # while
