Second place went to Tanner Donnelly with a 20 ” fish . “ Tanner had an awesome summer with a lot of good fish ,” noted Jamey Sorenson of the North Valley Tackle and Pro Shop .

Doug Philpott Team Captures First Place in Kokanee and Trout Derby
IONE – The Doug Philpott Team won first place in the adult division of the Pardee II Team Kokanee and Trout derby , sponsored by Kokanee Power , with two kokanee weighing a total of 3.26 pounds . The Pat Pagnella Team placed second with two kokanee weighing a total of 2.49 pounds , while the Jack Naves Team placed third with two kokes weighing a total of 2.32 pounds . The Doug Philpott Team also won first place in the trout division with two trout weighing a total of 6.20 pounds . The Jerilyn Emge Team placed second with 4.41 pounds , while the Stan Ita Team placed third with 3.24 pounds . Adam Naves won first place for kokanee in the junior division with 1.15 pounds . Grace Naves placed second with 1.13 pounds , while Jack Duvall Jr . placed third with 1.12 pounds . Aaron Lujan Jr . won first place for trout in the junior division with 1.85 pounds . Smallmouth and Striper Bites Ignite !
RIO VISTA - A sleeper fishing adventure that provides light tackle fun on the Sacramento River and adjacent sloughs is targeting smallmouth bass in the North Delta .

Don Paganelli and two anglers recently made a trip to Steamboat and Miner Sloughs and found great fishing success . “ We caught and released between 30 and 40 fish ,” he said . “ In addition to smallmouths up to 2-1 / 2 pounds , we caught and released largemouth bass to 3 pounds .” “ We caught the fish while using top water lures – poppers – and wacky-rigged Robo Worms off rip rap and weedlines .” Striped bass fishing is also going strong in the North Delta , reported Craig Newton of Will Fish Tackle in Auburn . “ Ron Retzlaff of Orangevale and his friends caught and released a total of 146 keeper stripers in three days while trolling this past week on the West Bank in the Sacramento and above the Antioch Bridge on the San Joaquin ,” said Newton . “ They trolled with deep-diving Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows .”

SHASTA / WHISKEYTOWN LAKES
Smokey but great trout action !
SHASTA LAKE - Shasta Lake has been quite smoky this week , but we ’ re still finding some great trout and the occasional salmon when we go deep for them . 80 ’ -100 ’ is where we ’ re seeing the best action , especially later in the day . Trolling dodger / spoon combinations has been effective and at times lethal presentation . The Shad and Bluegill at around 50 ’ -60 ’ is where we ’ re finding feeding salmon and trout early in the morning so running 1 ” -2 ” spoons can be real effective right now as well . Water temps are high on the top 50 ’ of the lake so going down deep to near 100 ’ is where the resting salmon and trout are hanging out . Because the fish are so deep , fishing over the old river channels is advised unless you ’ re prepared to lose gear when trolling deep . The lake is really low and is sitting at around 154 ’ below full right now . We ’ ll see a slower

drop in September this season when they reduce flows into the Sacramento River , but October flows are going to ramp up again for water deliveries south . By November we ’ re supposed to see minimum flows of 3,250 cfs for the remainder of the winter and spring seasons . The Sacramento River is seeing a big push of King salmon this week and the salmon fishing should get even better than it has been . The areas from Woodson Bridge in Corning all the way up to Anderson is holding good numbers of King salmon . This should remain the case until the fall run fizzles out at the end of October . With over 200 salmon trips booked this summer / fall , we ’ ll have lots of reports available throughout the season . We ’ ll be fishing in the aforementioned areas of the Sacramento River throughout the season and will be drifting Pautzke Fire Cure eggs or backtrolling Brad ’ s Killer Fishing Gear KF-16 plugs to catch our salmon . Stay tuned for more updates on the Sacramento River King salmon season ! Whiskeytown Lake has taken a back seat to Shasta Lake this year , but thats about to change . The Kokanee salmon fishing has improved dramatically and so has their size . Most of the Kokanee are running smaller this year , but Kokanee to 18 ” have been caught this past week . Fishing around the Whiskey Creek arm and the 299 bridge has been best and the Kokanee can be found from 40 ’ -90 ’ most days . Try to locate the schools on your fish finder to see where they are hanging out and drop down into the depths they are found . Traditional Kokanee trolling gear has been really good and we ’ re favoring the Paulina Peak dodgers and micro hoochies in pink or orange . Make sure to top off your Kokanee hooks with pautzke Fire Corn and add some tuna flavors into the mix . Most folks are getting early limits daily !
