BERKELEY MARINA
Rockfish , Lingcod Are On Bite Off Marin County Coast
BERKELEY - Normally this time of year the California Striped Bass Association ’ s West Delta Chapter would sponsor a charter boat trip aboard the California Dawn out of Berkeley Marina . I have many great memories of those trips during which we caught lots of quality lingcod , rockfish , striped bass and halibut . The association hasn ’ t booked the annual charter since the pandemic started in 2020 , but nonetheless , some of the CSBA anglers I ’ ve fished with in recent year have gone out on the Berkeley Marina charter boats to fish . Roger Mammon , the President of the CSBA West Delta Chapter and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Restore the Delta , and fellow CSBA member Mike Hall decided to book a rockfish trip off the Marin County coast aboard the Happy Hooker out of Berkeley Marina on August 7 . Hall concentrated on catching rockfish with shrimp flies , while Mammon focused on pursuing lingcod with sardines on trap rigs . The trips to the Marin County Coast and Farallon Islands have been producing limits of rockfish , as well as good counts of lingcod most days , so it was a great time to go fishing . The Happy Hooker ended up with 190 rockfish - full limits - and 8 lingcod for the 19 anglers . Mammon ’ s persistence was rewarded , as he landed one of the 8 lingcod , an 8-pounder . The lingcod count rose on the boat over the weekend . The Happy Hooker returned with 17 limits of rockfish and 14 lingcod up to 15 lbs . on Saturday , August 7 . On August 8 , Captain Jonathan Smith of the Happy Hooker reported “ another great day of rockfishing .” The final tally for the day was 28 lingcod to 19 pounds and 170 rockfish for 18 anglers . At press time on August 20 , the California Dawn fished the Farallon Islands and the anglers found excellent rockfish and lingcod action . The 16 passengers caught 160 rockfish and 23 lingcod . The New El Dorado 3 reported 21 salmon to 28 pounds for 18 passengers the same day . “ The fish were big and mean with lots of hook-ups and lost fish ,” reported Captain James Smith .

Some kings were caught but we had no takers .” “ We then went after the rockfish and that went very well ,” said Kolb . “ We were all done with limits for the family and crew ( 60 ) quality rockfish after only 3 drifts in 160 ’ of water off shore from the Big Beach . My Uncle Douglas , Auntie Brenda , and Cousin Dawn all from S . Dakota landed the biggest including our bonus lings .” The rockfish took shrimp flies and 6 oz . vertical jigs and swim baits by # Pitbulltackle from # TheOutdoorproshop
