Kokanee Are Bigger , But Tougher to Catch

NAPA – Boaters are catching some of the largest kokanee of the year at Lake Berryessa , although the fish are getting harder to catch . “ I found a few kokanee willing to play today at Berryessa on a recon mission looking for the big kokes on the move with my good friend Tammy .,” said Rich Crispi of TW Guide Service . “ We trolled deep at 88 to 115 ft . today with RMT moonshine dodgers and Apex lures .” They caught five kokanee , with the top three weighing 2.18 ; bs . ( 18in ) , 2.02 lbs . and 1.87 lbs . “ They are getting tougher to catch ,” said Crispi . “ You got to keep pounding them and follow them down .” Rene Villanueva reported similar kokanee action on a trip to the reservoir on August 19 , ending up with five kokanee to 18 inches . “ It was very smoky out there and the fish were from 8o to 103 ft . deep ,” said Villanueva . “ I trolled with a setback of 25 ft to 72 ft . I used orange , pink , gold and orange / gold dodgers with hoochies and Apex lures on long leaders at 1.3 mph .” For black bass , Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience recommends throwing top water lures over the weed beds in the morning at Berryessa , During the heat of the day , he advised anglers to use drop shot rigs with Robo Worms for smallmouth , largemouth and spotted bass in 20 to 30 feet of water .
