Lingcod and Rockfish Hitting on Sonoma County Reefs

BODEGA BAY – While salmon fishing was tough before the season closed for three weeks beginning June 1 , anglers have been bagging limits of rockfish and good numbers of lingcod along the Sonoma County Coast . A trip aboard the New Sea Angler on Saturday , June 4 , produced 18 lingcod to 17 pounds and 120 rockfish for 12 anglers , reported Rick Powers of the Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center . The previous trip on May 30 by the New Sea Angler yielded one salmon and 180 rockfish and 1-1 / 2 lingcod per rod for the 18 anglers . “ The rockfish are excellent quality brown , vermilion , China , canary , tiger and other bottom-dwelling rockfish . The fish hit squid-baited shrimp flies in 170 feet of water off Point Reyes ,” said Powers . Merlin Kolb of Reel Magic Sportfishing also reported top-notch rockfish action out of Bodega Bay . Bill and his sons Michael and Jacob Cassady and their pal Joseph Wicks , all of Placerville , landed limits of a mixed bag of medium to large rockfish and 5 lingcod . “ We fished in 200 feet of water down near the point ,” said Kolb . “ The fish took Pitbull Tackle vertical jigs , 6 oz , 8 ” swim baits and shrimp flies from Outdoor Pro Shop .,” said Kolb . Salmon fishing in the San Francisco Management Area from Point Arena to Pigeon Point will reopen on June 23 .
