The 17 anglers landed 170 rockfish up to 7 pounds . “ Rockfishing has been lights out .,” said Sheri Ingles . “ If you are looking to take fish home , you can ’ t do better than this . The limit is 10 fish per day and that ’ s what everybody has been going home with . Also , anglers are getting a few lingcod and cabezon depending on where the boats are going . Also , we ’ re seeing an occasional halibut .” Michael Cabanas , Captain of the New Captain Pete , checked in with limits of salmon for a private 10-person charter on his latest trolling adventure . “ We ended up with 22 salmon to 18 pounds , with a couple of fish for crew also ,” he stated . On a previous trip , Cabanas reported , “ Late limits today , but better late than never . We started out locally , where the action was hot yesterday , but not today . We made the move to the hot spot , but missed out on the morning bite . The afternoon bite turned on and we ended up with 7 limits for 7 anglers up to 18 lbs .”

Halibut Are Chomping On Bay Baits
SANTA CRUZ – California fishing has been great in Monterey Bay , with skiff anglers landing good numbers of fish near the Mile Buoy and near the Pajaro Dunes . “ The anglers are finding halibut in 40-70 feet of water ,” reported Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine on July 30 . “ The fish are biting on Glow Hoochies , Lime Big Hammers , and Squid . “ The rockfishing has been good near Ano Nuevo and Davenport . The salmon bite has slowed down , but there have been some caught in the shallow water . I did not hear of any tuna but one angler saw some good meter marks near the Davenport Fingers . The weather was great today ,” he said . On July 29 , there were a few salmon caught in the shallow water near Wilder Beach and in Capitola , said Fraser . The salmon were in 90-140 feet of water feeding on the anchovies . There were still some salmon being caught near Soldiers Club in 200-280 feet of water . “ The halibut fishing has been solid in front of Santa Cruz down to Pajaro . There have been some halibut caught up the coast , now that the water is warming up ,” he added . The salmon mooching bite has slowed down on Monterey Bay , so the boats out of Chris ’ Fishing Trips in Monterey have been concentrating on rockfish . The boats have been returning with daily rockfish limits , along with a few lingcod . The Checkmate checked in with 160 rockfish ( limits ) for 16 anglers on July 30 , while the Caroline returned with 140 rockfish ( limits ) for 14 anglers . The Checkmate had 140 rockfish ( limits ) for 14 anglers on July 29 , while the Caroline came back with 100 rockfish and 1 lingcod for 10 anglers . The latest salmon mooching adventure on the Checkmate tied up at the dock with 7 salmon for 15 anglers on July 28 . Stagnaro ’ s Fishing Trips out of Santa Cruz has been also focusing on rockfish . The most 7 hour rockcod adventure produced limits of rockfish , while a half-day rockfish trip yielded 225 rockfish ( 7.5 fish per rod ), a lingcod and a halibut . The latest twilight trip came back with 135 rockfish ( about 5 per rod ) and 2 lingcod , reported Ken Stagnaro .
