Trollers and Bank Anglers Are Nailing Fish

CHESTER - Lake level is currently sitting at 4480.96 fractionally higher than last year on the same date . After a week of warm weather water temperature is at 75 degrees . We are ciurrently experiencing thunderstorms and there is a 30 % chance of storms on Monday . Saturday evening the peninsula received eight tenths of an inch of rain while other areas of the lake received no precipitation . The rain was welcomed by most , except the five plus hundred people attending AFA ’ s annual picnic , according to Jim and Toni Pleau this is the first time in the twenty-nine-year history of the event that we saw rain . The event went on and was a successful fundraiser in spite of the weather . Fish continue to seek refuge in deeper water and around springs . Slow trolling plastics and crawlers remain the top choice for trollers . Big Springs , Rec # 2 , Dorado , the A-frame and the East Shore are all good places to start your day . Fish are stacking up at Hamilton Branch , fly and bank fishermen are catching quality fish early in the morning and late in the evening . Road construction continues all roads leading to Almanor and you can expect delays . All our campgrounds and RV parks are open and both public boat ramps remain open . It ’ s hard to believe tomorrow is August 1rst , this year has gone by quickly . Fall is right around the corner , we will see temperatures dropping by the end of August and less traffic on the water , if you haven ’ t already planned your fall trip to Almanor now is the time . Striped Bass Are Slamming Spoons , Swimbaits

SACRAMENTO – While salmon fishermen have concentrated their efforts on the Sacramento River below the mouth of the American lately , the striped bass bite is going strong on the lower American . Bureau of Reclamation water releases into the American from Nimbus Dam were 4055 cfs at press time , drawing both stripers and salmon into the river . “ Denise Loo , Dave Clark and I caught six stripers ranging from 4 to 6 pounds while spooning in the Lower American River below the Highway 160 Bridge during a recent trip ,” reported Alan Fong , manager at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse . “ We used Blade Runner spoons to catch the stripers .” Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle in Auburn confirmed the improved striper bite on the American .

Annual Moonlighter Bass Tournament Set for September 10

BURSON – The annual Moonlighter Bass Tournament at lake Amador is set for September 7 from 7 p . m . to 7 a . m . Sign in will be at 4 pm while the barbecue will be at 5 p . m . The cost is $ 200 per team . The event will feature 75 percent ; payback between first and fifth place if there are over 20 entries . The 75 percent payback will between first , second and third places if there are under

Meanwhile , anglers are finding the top action on catfish , carp and bluegill at Amador . “ For catfish , you should fish 6 to 10 feet deep close to shore in the early mornings and evenings ,” stated Sheree Rose at the Lake Amador Resort . “ The fish are hitting nightcrawlers and shrimp scented with garlic . One angler hooked a catfish on a Rooster Tail spinner , of all things .” There are some big catfish out there , as evidenced by the 14 lb . channel cat that Matthew Sul from San Jose outside of Cat Cove during a recent trip to Amador . On July 27 , an angler landed an 18-1 / 2 lb . carp while fishing with an oatmeal / jello combo from shore . For bluegill , anglers should fish right around the boat docks with red worms and wax worms . The water level is 15 feet from full and dropping about a foot a week .

BERRYESSA LAKE

Potluck Anglers Bag Kokanee , Kings , Rainbows and Bass

NAPA – Nate Kelsch of Big Nate ’ s Guide Service reported excellent “ potluck ” fishing on his latest trolling adventure at Berryessa . “ Returning client Jeff Burlison and his good buddy Paul hammered the fish .,” said Kelsch . “ We landed 15 out of the 22 fish that we hooked . We had a solid mix of beautiful kokanee salmon , king salmon , 2 species of bass and some serious holdover broomtail rainbow trout . All fish were caught on Paulina Peak Tackle in various colors , and lures with no single lure outperforming the rest at depths down to 103 feet .” The kokanee salmon bite at Berryessa has been bouncing up and down , with one day producing good fishing and the next day tough action .
