The Fall Shasta Lake Trout Derby is back !
T he Shasta Lake Fall Trout derby will once again be held this year , after missing 2021 because of low water in Shasta . This year , the water is low , but launching is available at several ramps , including Sugarloaf ramp in Lakehead , where
the derby is based . The Fall Trout Derby has run every year , except 2021 , since 2000 . It is hosted by the Shasta Lake Business Owners Association . The Derby features two full days of fishing with a 4 trout weigh in per team . A team is one or more anglers fishing from the same boat . The 4 trout weigh in can only include one german brown trout per day . The Derby entrance fee of $ 175
includes both days of fishing , plus a great dinner at the Lakehead Lions club , a fun raffle and a derby shirt . The weigh in is held both days at the Basshole and Brews parking lot in Lakehead . This is always a very fun derby with lots of camaraderie . Shasta Lake is huge , and there are plenty of places to catch trout , even with the low water conditions . There are several places to rent a

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife ( CDFW ) “ Fishing in the City ” program plants channel catfish in urban lakes and ponds in the Sacramento metropolitan area from May into September . The program also stocks rainbow trout in the urban lakes and ponds from November through March . In addition , the program conducts fishing clinics at the same locations for both beginners and more experienced anglers during the same time period . Liem Nguyen of Sacramento landed these two hefty channel catfish while fishing squid at Granite Regional Park in Sacramento on September 3 , Free Fishing Day .
