Rainbows , Kings and Bass Reward Late Summer Trollers

NAPA – The kokanee bite is over now for the season at Lake Berryessa , but don ’ t despair , since rainbow trout are on a hot bite .. Nate Kelsch of Big Nate ’ s Guide Service reported full limits of rainbow trout every day , along with a few big kings and some spotted and smallmouth bass , on his latest trolling adventures on Berryessa . The rainbows have ranged from 14 to 23 inches long . “ Today Mark and Andrew caught full limits of rainbows to 21 inches and one king weighing 4-1 / 2 pounds . We were off the water by 9:30 a . m .,” Kelsch said on September 7 . “ We have been trolling with Speed Spoons , Needlefish and broken back Rapalas from the surface to 70 feet deep .” “ The fish are staying inside the bait schools . We have been fishing the main body of the lake , but the bait is moving around every day ,:” he observed . On his previous trip Berryessa , Mark , Roy and Mike of Gone Fishing Marine loaded up with 2 kings to 6 pounds and limits of beautiful rainbows by 1030 a . m . while trolling the same lures on the main body . We picked up the rainbows in about 3 different spots and every time we moved , the fish seemed to want to play . We caught 14 fish total , keeping our 10 rainbows , 2 person limits . The largest fish weighed 2.8 pounds and measured 20 inches long .”

Kokanee Go Into Spawning Mode

DOBBINS – Kokanee salmon have now headed up the river arm as they get ready to spawn . The great kokanee bite at Bullards Bar is near its end for the larger adult fish that are now in spawning mode . However , anglers can catch the smaller “ next year ’ s fish ” averaging around 10 inches in the main body near the dam . Craig Newton of Willfish Bait in Auburn recommended trolling for the kokanee with dodger / hoochie and dodger / spinner combinations . Bullards Bar Reservoir is holding 665,114 acre feet of water , 69 percent of capacity and 103 percent of average . Rainbow trout remain the top quarry at Englebright Reservoir . Anglers can pick up limits of rainbows weighing 1-1 / 2 to 2 pounds while trolling dodger / worm and flasher / worm combinations , noted Newton . Justin Leonard of Outcast Fishing
