Crab / Rockfish Combos Produce Great Fishing !

EL GRANADA – Half Moon Bay boats going on crab / rockfish combos are catching limits of both rockfish and Dungeness crab on most trips . The Queen of Hearts returned with 110 rockfish and 110 Dungeness crab , full limits for the 11 anglers , on Dec . 2 . The previous trip aboard the Queen of Hearts yielded 130 Dungeness crabs and 115 rockfish for 13 fishermen , according to the Half Moon Bay Sportfishing Center . On the latest trips by the New Captain Pete , Captain Michael Cabanas reported “ limits of crab all weekend , with 150 crab for 15 anglers caught for today , and some nice quality rockfish coming over the rail .” On November 21 , the California Department of Fish and Wildlife ( CDFW ) announced in a statement that it is continuing the temporary recreational crab trap restriction in Fishing Zones 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 due to presence of humpback whales and the potential for entanglement from trap gear . This area includes California waters from the Sonoma / Mendocino line all of the way to the U . S ./ Mexico border . However , the recreational crab trap restriction for Fishing Zones 1 and 2 , from the CA / OR border to the Sonoma Mendocino County Broder , was lifted Nov . 28 , 2022 at 9 a . m . The CDFW reminds recreational crabbers that take of Dungeness crab by other methods , including hoop nets and crab snares , is allowed during a temporary trap restriction . The commercial Dungeness crab fishery in Fishing Zones 3-6 will also remain delayed due to presence of high numbers of humpback whales and the potential for entanglement with lines and traps in this fishery . CDFW anticipates the next risk assessment will take place on or before Dec . 7 , 2022 , at which time CDFW Director Charlton H . Bonham will re-evaluate the temporary recreational crab trap restriction and commercial fishery delay in Fishing Zones 3-6 . That risk assessment is expected to inform the potential for a commercial fishery opener and modification of the recreational trap restriction in Fishing Zones 3-6 on Dec . 16 , 2022 . “ We appreciate the discussions with the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group regarding risk of entanglement ,” said Director Bonham . “ Ultimately , we must rely on the best available science and make management decisions based on the Risk Assessment Mitigation Program ( RAMP ) regulations .” For more information related to the risk assessment process , please visit CDFW ’ s Whale Safe Fisheries page or more information on the Dungeness crab fishery , please visit wildlife . ca . gov / crab .

Boats Will Focus On Rockfish Through Dec . 31

MONTEREY – Fishing pressure for rockfish , crabs , halibut and other species has dwindled in the Monterey Bay Area with the arrival of cooler weather and the first winter storms . Boats fishing out of Chris ’ s Fishing Trips will continue to focus on rockfish and lingcod fishing through Dec . 31 . The charter boats are going down to Point Sur when calm weather allows and fishing in the reefs closer to home when the wind and swell kicks up . The boats will switch over to sanddab / crab combos from Jan . 1 through Dec . 7 2023 / Rockfish trips are producing limits of rockfish and a few lingcod . The 20 anglers aboard the Checkmate landed limits of rockfish ( 200 ) and 6 lingcod on Dec . 3 , while the 20 anglers aboard the Star of Monterey landed limits of rockfish ( 200 ) and 10 lingcod on Dec . 2 . “ There were only a few boats
