Cal Kellogg and Wes Ward of www . fishhuntshoot . com made a scouting trip together for 90 minutes that produced fish . “ We hooked 3 trout and landed 3 rainbows up to 4 pounds while using garlic Power Bait from our pontoon boat ,” Kellogg stated . “ If you want to catch trout , it ’ s absolutely critical that you fish in less than 4 feet of water ,” said Kellogg . “ The water is muddy and cold at 47 degrees . I think the water will clear up earlier than it did last year because the water running into the lake is now crystal clear . We plan to resume trolling for trout on March 15 . It ’ s exciting to have a full lake to fish .” One private plant of 1,000 pounds of rainbows took place on January 12 , while the next plant of 1,000 pounds of trout , including trophysize fish , went into the lake the week of January 23-27 .

Cove ramps were open at press time , according to the Folsom Lake Marina .. With the high inflow of water from the North , Middle and South forks of the American River , there is a lot of debris on the lake and boaters should use caution while on the lake . Large logs can be floating just below the lakes surface and can be a real danger . Before the big storms hit the region , Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience said bass fishing was “ pretty good ” at Folsom . “ I caught and released 10 fish and missed just as many while using a drop shot shot rig at 30 to 50 feet deep in the South Fork ,” said Paganelli . “ The fish were spotted bass weighing up to 3 pounds and averaging 2 pounds .” Since the storms muddied up Folsom , Paganelli recommended using rip baits , tubes and drop shot rigs and throwing out spinner baits ,

Annual Maybe Ice Fishing Derby Set For Feb . 18
PORTOLA - Lake Davis is filling up with the water from recent storms , but few people have been fishing the late for trout lately . The ice conditions on the lake weren ’ t available at press time . The Lake Davis Annual Maybe Ice Fishing Derby is set for Saturday , February 18 , 2023 . All proceeds will benefit the Eastern Plumas Rural Fire Protection District . The derby headquarters will be at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort , 7552 Lake Davis Road , at Lake Davis , Portola , California . The entry fee is $ 20.00 . SACRAMENTO – Fishing is tough for boaters targeting rainbow trout , king salmon and black bass at Folsom Lake , due to cold and muddy water conditions .
