Smallmouth Bass Bite Should Shift Into Gear

RIO VISTA – The striped bass fishing on the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers has slowed down recently , but the smallmouth bass fishing in the North Delta is expected to heat up with the weather . “ On our latest trolling trips on the West Bank of the Sacramento River , we have been averaging 5 to 6 keepers out of maybe 10 to 11 hits ,” said Mark Wilson striper fishing expert . “ We have been catching a lot of females that haven ’ t spawned yet . The fish have been running 4 to 9 pounds , with an occasional bigger one .” “ We have been trolling with Yo-Zuri shallow-running Crystal Minnows ,” said Wilson . “ Anything with green on it is doing pretty good . We have been fishing the area from sandy beach to Sherman Lake in 6 o 8 foot of water .” On the latest trip Wilson made to the Sacramento , the fishing was very tough due to the wind , with only one shaker landed out of 3 hits . Wilson is planning to begin smallmouth bass fishing in Steamboat , Miner and Sutter sloughs and the Sacramento River in the North Delta within a month . . The fishing for these fish can be superb at times . “ When the fishing is going strong , three experienced anglers in a boat fishing with plastic worms can hook 80 to 100 6fish in a day ,” advised Wilson . “ The fish range from 6 inches to 17 inches . We might limit out with 10 fish over 12 inches for two fishermen .” “ We toss out 4-1 / 2 inch worms on anything with riprap ,” he said . “ We use red patterns to match the crawdads . We fish with split shot or Zappu heads with the wackyrigged worms . We let the worms fall and then them drag them on 6 to 8 lb . test line . We also catch some largemouths when fishing rocky structure with weeds .”
