Salmon fishing may be closed on the Sacramento River this year , but the river in the Redding and Anderson areas offers top-notch catch and release for rainbow trout year-round . Fly fishers use an array of nymphs , streamers and dry fly patterns to hook the rainbows , while anglers using traditional gear catch the fish on a variety of plugs and other lures . Cat Kaiser operations and events director for the Golden State Salmon Association ( GSSA ), had a great time hooking and releasing this beautiful wild rainbow trout on the Sacramento River in Redding this June with Ross Wiikerson , fishing guide for the Fly Shop in Redding . The rainbow was one of six species , ranging from brown trout on the Trinity River to Pacific halibut off Trinidad , that Kaiser landed on a recent marathon fishing road trip in Northern California .
