tipped . “ With fish being found in these depths , jigging streamers will no longer be necessary , and using a type 5 to 7 inch per second sinking line while back kicking a streamer imitating tui chub , or a bugger , beetle or boocbie combination will be a great way to get into fish right now ,” he advised . “ We recommend mixing up your retrieve and add the occasional erratic strip , random pause or various other means to trigger strikes when the standard trolling isn ’ t getting it done . The best reports for float tubers have been coming from the north end of the lake , with some anglers also finding good success at Pelican ,” he stated . “ With this storm expected next week , keep a close eye on the forecast if you are looking to get out on a small boat or float tube and err on the side of safety , as there have already a few capsized boats and close calls this year ,” Zimmerman cautioned .

Fly Fishermen Lay into Wild Rainbows , Steelhead

REDDING - Flows on the Sacramento River in Redding are back up to 6,500 cfs and the wild trout fishing has been “ on fire ,” reported fly fishing guide Brian Flint of Trout Vision . “ We are picking up large fish with plenty of double ups ,” Flint stated . “ Caddis , stoneflies , mayflies and salmon eggs are keeping the rods bent all day long . There are good morning and evening hatches on the warmer days , with more mayfly mid-day hatches on the overcast days .”

“ The riffle bite is still on for no and we ’ re hooking up in all the usual places . If you love a good 70 degree day with some big trout , now is go time . If big wild trout with the occasional hatchery steelhead and good numbers is your thing , this is a killer option right now ,” he concluded . Flows are at 670 cfs in the low flow of the Feather River , while flows are at 2300 cfs total in the high flow , according to Flint . “ Steelhead are in the river in good numbers , with more hatchery than wild fish showing ,” said Flint . “ The low flow and high flow are both holding salmon and steelhead .” “ Salmon eggs and caddis are on the menu for the steelhead , along with blue wing olives . Attractor patterns get the job done , and junk flies like squirmy worms . If you are looking for numbers of hard fighting fresh fish , this is a great option ,” Flint advised .

TRUCKEE – The kokanee season is over at Stampede Lake as the fish spawn in the lake ’ s tributaries . Few anglers are targeting Lahontan cutthroat trout , rainbow trout and smallmouth bass , though fishing should be good for all three species for anglers using a variety of techniques . A better bet is Prosser Lake , where fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout is superb . On a recent trip that Cal Kellogg of fishhuntshoot . com made to Prosser Lake , he and his two friends experienced wideopen trout fishing from kayaks on this Sierra Nevada reservoir near the town of Truckee .
