Fall Trout Plants Begin

IONE – The surface temperature of the lake has reached the mark for the Lake Amador management to start releasing trout grown in the on-site fish hatchery . “ 500 pounds of trout were released yesterday right at the blue dock .,” said Lee Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort on October 26 . “ There were a few blues and trophy sized fish ., but most were Cutbows in the 2 lb . class . I would expect these fish to start out running a little deeper in the 15 ’ range , but the lake is cooling fast with the chilly nights . Most trout should be feeding right on top very soon .” The lake level is 22 ’ down and the surface water temperature is 71 degrees . The water clarity is 8 feet and the oxygen level is 8.8mg / L .

Steelhead Lead Late Fall Angling Parade

SACRAMENTO – The steelhead are starting to show in the lower American River . Most of the fish are in the 2 to 4 lb .. range , but expect the larger fish to show as the water temperature cools down .

“ Kyler Perry and clients caught a lot of steelhead on Perry ’ s latest guided trips on the river from Sailor Bar to Sunrise before the closure of the upper section of river on October 31 ,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman ’ s Warehouse . “ They were pulling Maglips from a drift boat .” Until the upper section opens to steelhead fishing on January 1 , 2023 , anglers will have to fish the lower river below the SMUD powerline at the southwest boundary of Ancil Hoffman Park . Shore fishing should be productive for anglers tossing spinners , spoons , Glo Bugs and roe in the Gristmill , Arden Bar , Harrington ’ s Access , Watt Avenue , Howe Avenue and other areas on the river . Bureau of Reclamation water releases to the lower American River were 2,472 cfs at press time . Black bass fishing has been very good in Miner Slough and at Liberty Island . “ Denise Loo and I ended up with a 20 pound limit of largemouth bass after our latest trip to Miner Slough on October 25 ,” said Fong . “ Our biggest five fish weighed a total of 20 pounds . We were flipping with Brush Hogs and Rage Craws in 3 to 5 feet of water .” For striped bass , Fong recommended fishing five inch pearl swimbaits at Liberty Island or in the
