EAGLE LAKE cont .
The biggest fish we landed this season to date weighed in at 5lbs 11oz . The best baits were watermelon grubs fished at 9-14 feet deep on a downrigger in water 15-30 feet deep . We have started to pick up fish on Jay Fair Tui Chub pattern trolling flies fished 2-5 feet under the surface . How it Is : Both yesterday and today , the bite died with most boats returning to the dock with 1-3 trout after a long day of trolling . We had rain move in yesterday causing the barometric pressure to drop so this may have caused the bite to suddenly turn off . As night-time temperatures continue to drop , trout will continue their migration to shallower water where they will be more accessabble and , hopefully , go back on a strong bite . There are still balls of minnows right up against shore , marked by groups of white pelicans gorging on them . There are also large schools of minnows offshore , marked by hundreds of grebes diving on them from the surface , returning with a wiggling minnow in its beak . We are trolling our baits in and around these groups of grebes . I expect the bite to rebound as the water continues to cool . The trout will then move into shallower water and school up in various areas around the lake . We just have to find them . Note : The trout this season are the largest I have encountered in my 20 plus years of fishing at Eagle Lake .

EAST BAY LAKES
Rainbow Trout Plants Start at Lakes
OAKLAND - The East Bay Regional Parks District planted the first of the regional lakes this week and trout action has turned on . Smallmouth bass are still snapping at Del Valle , and there was an 11.2-pound largemouth taken at Lake Chabot . Quarry Lakes anglers enjoyed some mixed opening season action with near perfect conditions , a light crowd , and a decent mix of fish . Light liners fishing tube jigs , mini paddle tails and micro spoons , averaged about two fish per with some limits in the mix . The water level is down , but the cove , swim beach and the row are all very fishable . Weeds aren ’ t too bad . Water tempertures are just a bit high , and the fish took some time adjusting . In the cove , the fish held tight against the brush and anglers sight casting did best . Anglers fishing bait from the pier also saw a two fish average . Action picked up on Wednesday and should only get better as more plants make their way . The swim beach and the row were both slow . Shadow Cliffs is in near perfect condition , the water level is very good , with great clarity and submerged weeds . Anglers saw similar action with an average of
