Santa Cruz county coastline . The groundfish season is restricted to a 20 fathoms and less inshore fishery from May 1 to September 30 . The Caroline returned to the dock with limits of rockfish ( 230 ) and 2 lingcod on Saturday , June 1 , reported Chris Arcoleo of Chris ’ Fishing Trips . The Checkmate came back with limits of rockfish ( 160 ), 32 cabezon and 16 lingcod on Friday , May 31 . “ The fishing has been excellent ,” said Chris Arcoleo of Chris ’ Fishing Trips . “ Anglers are hooking a mixture of olive , yellow , blue , black , vermilion and gopher rockfish .”

Fishermen are using a mixture of shrimp flies , bars , jigs and cut baits to entice the bottomfish . Ken Stagnaro of Stagnaro ’ s Fishing Trips in Santa Cruz also reported top-notch rockfish action . “ One six hour nearshore rockfish trip produced limits of nearshore rockfish , 2 lingcod and one cabezon ,” said Stagnaro , “ while the next nearshore trip yielded 122 rockfish and 9 lingcod . A twilight trip ended up with 28 rockfish ( about five per rod ), 1 lingcod , and 1 cabezon .” “ The halibut fishing has finally picked up in Santa Cruz and Capitola ,” reported Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz on June 1 . “ There were some good scores of halibut caught near Capitola and the Mile Buoy . The bait and warm water has moved in . The rock fishing was good up the coast in the morning near Davenport . The wind was down in the morning and swell was small .”
