Our 43rd Year erkeley – Its the end of July and the swimbait trips on-board the California Dawn II are now in the record books . okanee Power held its fifth event of the 2024 derby circuit on Saturday , August 3 , at Stampede Reservoir . The contest featured cool mountain weather and plentiful kokanee to keep the entrants busy . Stampede is typically one of Kokanee Power ’ s most popular derbies due to its pleasant weather and abundant fish populations . Stampede Reservoir is a scenic high-Sierra lake formed by a dam impounding the Little Truckee River . It sits at an elevation of 5,949 feet above sea level , about seven miles northeast of the town of Truckee . It features two campgrounds and one launch ramp with a single dock . Stampede is typically snowed-in during the winter months , but provides a cooling break from roasting valley heat waves during the summer . This year was no exception , as participants flocked up the hill to escape valley temperatures in excess of 100-degrees . I started out this year ’ s derby experience by running up the hill on the preceding Friday , August 2 , with my wife Gina and son Adam . Chilly mountain air greeted us as we launched the
