Big Lahontan Cutthroat on Pre-Spawn Bite
Shore fishing at Pyramid Lake is still going strong . Lots of fish in the teens and twenties are being landed from shore . The choronamid bite is going strong with fly fisherman . Indicator fishing with a size 12 zebra midge to match the choronamid has been best . Conventional guys are throwing spoons and spinners from shore has been producing as well . Also crank baits in a variety of styles from scatter Raps to Wiggle Warts . Boaters have been trolling U-20 flatfish , Maglips in 3.5 inch and 3 ” Tomic and Lyman style plug baits with and without side planers . This time of year , fish are putting on weight to get ready to spawn . We are seeing the males with spawning colors and females full of eggs . Fish are starting to key in on moving water and stacking up around the south nets really getting in to that pre-spawn mode . As they become closer to spawning , downsizing to 2-3 ” baits and trolling in that 2-3 mph range is best . Colors vary from day to day . Sunny days natural chub patterns and watermelon has been good . Light white cloud cover that almost makes things brighter darker colors

Cory Kellar of Hendrix outdoors was out last week and ran mostly mid sizes . Flatfish and Maglips did best for him off side planners the Tui Chub pattern and metallic rainbow . In response to the golden mussel problem , the tribe added barriers to the dirt launch at the south end at Popcorn beach . They want to funnel everyone through the check station in Sutcliffe . The check station is open 7 days a week now from early morning to about 3pm . They will check your boat inside and out for water . You have to lower the engines to see if they contain water . If you ’ re clean and dry you can launch at the ramp at Pelican Point . If they find water in your boat , they will do a decontamination for a fee of $ 20.00 .

switch over to bait fishing . According to Mark , Clyde bait fished with sardines between lights 5 to 14 near Sherman Island in 30 feet of water and caught his limit of stripers . Meanwhile Mark continued to tell me that the trolling bite continues up river near the Port of Sacramento . He and his friends are averaging 12 keepers a trip , not trolling the usual Yozuri or P-Line lures but as reported in last month ’ s report , they ’ re catching their stripers using a black bass lure made by Berkley called the “ Dredger .” The Dredger , rated to troll 14 ½ feet in either green or
