Rainbows and Browns Top Maybe Ice Fishing Derby
PORTOLA – The Maybe Ice Fishing Derby took place on Feb . 15 - and anglers indeed caught some beautiful fish through the ice . First place goes to Zeb Wilcox of Janesville , California for catching a 21 inch rainbow weighing 3 pounds , according to Jeanne Graham at the J & J Grizzly Store and Campground Resort Second place goes to Aaron Crouther for catching a 20 inch 2.4 lb . German brown . Third place went to Sean Dustin of Reno , who caught an 18.5 inch rainbow weighing 2.3 pounds . 57 people entered the event – and some who decided not to fish had a party in the parking lot . Successful anglers used nightcrawlers , PowerBait and mummified wax worms ( mummy worms ). “ It was a tough fishing day , but we enjoyed gorgeous weather ,” she said . Proceeds from this event went to Plumas County Search and Rescue . The ice was 4 inches thick at the dam . “ Anything else was not safe . Somebody fell through the ice north of Honker Bay on the day before the derby , but they were tall and were able to get out and warm up ,” noted Graham . Just a reminder : the ice isn ’ t monitored and some areas may not be safe for ice fishing . Always have a buddy or two and be prepared with necessary lifesaving equipment . BE SAFE out there .

Eleven fish made their way to the boat along with a few lost and some missed opportunities . There were lots of small salmon , but they provided good action for us .” The anglers landed rainbows up to 2-1 / 2 pounds and king salmon in the 14 to 16 inch range . “ The kings and rainbows were holding at the same depths ,” he observed . “ We trolled with homemade spoons on both leadcore rods and downrigger rods at 10 to 25 feet deep .” On his previous trip to the lake , Smith reported a solid day at Don Pedro . “ It started off by picking two guys

EAST BAY LAKES ROUNDUP
Target Quarry Lakes , Shadow Cliff for Trout
FREMONT - East Bay Regional Parks have been fishing well but are starting to suffer from the backto-back storms and heavy rain . Anglers fishing the recent plant at Lake Del Valle reported that the lake is unfishable due to dirty water and heavy shoreline debris . Lake

Temescal blew out mid-week , and the water level at Lake Chabot has gotten even higher , further limiting shoreline access . Horseshoe Lake in the Quarry Lakes Regional Park is in good condition and fishing well , Shadow Cliffs is a bit stained , but fishing well , and Contra Loma is also fishing well . Horseshoe Lake has been fishing very well . Action has been solid from the peninsula , along the shoreline adjacent the swim beach , the Cove and along Fisherman ’ s Row . The lake level has remained relatively stable with plenty of shoreline , and decent water quality . There have been plenty of holdover bigs , and the most recent plant held some good-sized mid-season fish as well . Both Shinn and Grau ponds kicked out some decent bass just before the last rain , and bass action should only improve with better weather and the closer we get to spring . Shadow Cliffs has been fishing well and despite the rain lake conditions have remained good with only moderate stain . The most recent plant also included some good-sized mid-season fish and catch numbers have been fair on lures and bait . There were two hog bass taken : one weighed 5.4-pound and the second came in at 6.3 . There are shad boils starting to emerge , indicating a solid baitfish population and a decent upcoming spring bass season . Lake Chabot has been fishing well but the current water level has made shoreline access increasingly difficult . Most of the shoreline to the left of the marina is submerged with just a ribbon of dry ground but there are several remaining access points along the shoreline out to Coot Landing . The shoreline across the marina and to the first dock has some fishable access but things
