Party Boaters Score Big Sacks of Rockfish and Lingcod
MONTEREY – Deep water fishing for assorted red rockfish has been very good since the opening of the groundfish season on April 1. The latest trip aboard the Checkmate on April 18 produced 158 rockfish and 2 lingcod for 21 anglers, according to Chris Arcoleo of Chris’ Fishing Trips. The Caroline checked in with limits of rockfish( 170) and 9 petrale sole for 17 anglers on the same day. The anglers have been fishing over 50 fathoms of water with shrimp flies, tipped with squid strips, bars, jigs and swimbaits. A trip aboard the Checkmate on April 17 yielded 172 rockfish and 2 lingcod for 23 anglers, while a trip board the same boat on April 16 came back with limits of rockfish( 180), including limits of vermilions, and 12 lingcod to 20 pounds. A trip aboard the Checkmate on April 15 reported limits of rockfish( 140) and 14 lingcod for 14 passengers. The rockfish season will run from April 1 to Dec. 30:

Rockfish action is also going strong off Santa Cruz.“ The wind was calm all morning and the deep water rockfish were on the bite,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine.“ There were a few more halibut caught near the Mile Buoy and Pleasure Point. The surf anglers are still catching perch and striped bass. There was one boat who went looking for bluefin tuna, but only found cold water and a few whales.“
