Berkley scented baits started in 1985 when they released their first scent known as“ Strike”. It was a spray on product that you could apply to any lure or bait you liked. Then Power Bait was released in 1988, which was a scent that was injected into normal soft plastic baits to make them more attractive to fish. Then, in 2003 Berkley introduced the new type of bait called“ Gulp”. Gulp is totally different from most other soft baits. Most of them are made from Polyvinyl chloride or PVC, the same as the pipes in your house! Gulp however, isn’ t plastic at all, it is made from water based resins that makes it biodegradable. The Spring Trout & Salmon Derby at Shasta Lake is happening this May 3rd and 4th, 2025. Shasta is full to the brim and all launching facilities are in full operation. We are all anticipating a great Spring Trout Derby! The Spring Trout & Salmon Derby is hosted by the Shasta Lake Business Owners Association in conjunction with Kokanee Power. The Derby features two full days of fishing with a 4 fish weigh in per team. A team is one or more anglers fishing from the same boat. The 4 fish weigh in can only include one German brown trout per day, plus any number of rainbow trout and king salmon, but not exceeding 4 fish total. This derby promises a total of $ 10,000 in Prize Money, including $ 2000 for first place and $ 1400 for second. The Derby entrance fee of $ 160 includes both days of fishing, plus a great dinner at the Lakehead Lions club, and a fun raffle. The weigh in is held both days at the Basshole and Brews parking lot in Lakehead. This is always a very fun derby with lots of camaraderie. Shasta Lake is huge, and the trout and salmon are in excellent condition this year with the high water conditions. Don’ t hesitate, there is a maximum of 250 anglers allowed in the derby.
