Photo courtesy of Dave Millhollin, Cameron Park. to 2-1/2 pounds and five stripers to 10 pounds while using glide baits on our latest trip to Liberty Island,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman’s Warehouse. “Warren lost a striper in the teens right at the boat.” “We hooked the stripers at 3 feet deep and the largemouths around 15 feet derp,” he noted. “The two best baits were S-Wavers and Sneaky Petes. We also used chatterbaits.” James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service said the stripers bite has slowed down in the Delta with big tides and cold weather conditions, although his clients landed decent numbers of stripers on his most recent two trips. “We landed 6 keepers on each trip while drifting mudsuckers on the San Joaquin between Antioch and Broad Slough,” said Netzel. “The fish averaged 21 to 22 inches in length. The water temperature was cold, 52 degrees.” Other anglers are catching cold water crappie in Snodgrass Slough. “I went striper fishing in Snodgrass, but told my friend to bring a crappie rod along,” reported Don Paganelli at Paganelli’s Bass Fishing Experience. “As it turned out, we landed only one striper while using Alabama rigs, but caught and released 25 crappie up to ¾ pounds” “The crappie hit pearl, chartreuse and orange crappie jigs at around 22 feet deep,” he said. “The key was to leave your lures motionless – the more you moved, the less chance you had of getting a bite. We were having really light bites., so we slowly dragged the lures off the bottom.” - Dan Bacher SACRAMENTO AREA Urban Pond Rainbows, Port Stripers Highlight Winter Options SACRAMENTO – Local anglers are concentrating on fishing for trout in local ponds or for striped bass and catfish in the Port of Sacramento. For striped bass and catfish, Dennis Phanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle recommended fishing from shore and boat in the Port of Sacramento and Sacramento Deepwater Channel. “Fish jumbo minnows and bloodworms for the stripers and anchovies and sardines for the catfish,” he tipped. “Expect to hook schoolie stripers in the 18 to 20 inch range, along with an occasional larger fish.” - Dan Bacher SANTA CLARA VALLEY/ SAN LUIS LAKES Uvas Catfish On Winter Prowl COYOTE – The weather may be cold, but that hasn’t stopped the channel catfish from biting at Uvas Reservoir. “One customer landed an 11 lb. catfish while soaking garlic chicken liver from shore at Uvas,” said B.J. Kendrick at Coyote Bait and Tackle. “Other anglers reported bagging catfish in the 10 lb. range. In addition, some smaller cats in the 3 to 4 lb. range are also showing.” For black bass, Kendrick suggested heading to Calero. “One boater caught and released a 7.5 lb. largemouth the day before Christmas,” said Kendrick. “Two other fishermen reported bagging bass weighing 3 and 5 pounds at the lake. Your top prospect is to fishing jigs slowly in the cold water.” Boating is closed at Anderson, but shore fishermen are catching some largemouths while on the left side of the lake near the dam past the spillway. “I caught and released two largemouths measuring 13 and 14 inches while working shakey heads on a recent venture there,” Kendrick stated. San Luis Reservoir is kicking out stripers for shore anglers. “Fishermen are picking up schoolie stripers in the 20 inch range while throwing out pileworms, bloodworms and jumbo minnows,” he said. “The top area is near the Romero Visitors Center, but the California Aqueduct between the main lake and the forebay is also producing stripers.” - Dan Bacher CONTINUED ON PG 21 TAHOE SPORTFISHING est.1953 Lake Tahoe’s Largest Fishing Fleet year-round fishing Half & Full Day Charters single fisherman to large families & private parties We supply everything you need to fish!
