Bay Charters, continues to find limits of crab, and Captain Josh Stevens will be booking sanddab/crab combination trips until April. - Dave Hurley VOL.38 • ISS. 3 SALTWATER Further north in Pacifica, rough weather has closed the pier on a number of days, but the pier is open daily from 4:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m., weather depending. Anglers are finding limited success for Dungeness crab with snares, but surfperch action has been decent with a variety of lures including Lucky Craft’s Flash Minnow, Berkley Camo Worms, or Gulp! Worms. Sand crabs are also effective. - Dave Hurley HALF MOON BAY Boaters Nail Sanddabs and Crabs, Shore Anglers Bag Rockfish and Perch EL GRANADA - The 2018 rockfish season ended with limits of rockfish being the rule, along with limits of Dungeness crab for the few party boats running combination trips. The weather was the only limiting factor over the final week of the season as we move into the period when sanddabs, petrale sole, and Dungeness crab trips will occupy the party boats while shore anglers will focus on crab with snares along with surfperch and striped bass. Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat is the only large party boat running sand dab/crab combination trips, and they ran the first trip of the new year on Wednesday, January 3rd. He said, “The sand dabs were very plentiful and the fishermen also landed some petrale sole in 325 feet of water 16 miles west of the Pillar Point Harbor. The weather was good enough for us to head further west into deep water for the sole, and we will give this fishery a try whenever the conditions allow us to work the deeper water.” Out of Half Moon Bay Sportfishing, the party boats will focus on nature trips along with whale watching in the interim months before the rockfish and salmon seasons open in April. Captain Jerad Davis of the Salty Lady will also be running whale watching trips on Saturdays and Sundays through April. Shore anglers fishing off the Pillar Point Harbor jetty and pier are continuing to catch rockfish, crabs, monkeyface eels and surfperch while fishing squid, pileworms and other baits, according to Stephanie at the Half Moon Bay Sportfishing Center. MONTEREY BAY Anglers Target Sanddabs, Crabs and Perch MOSS LANDING – Since the end of the boat- based rockfish season, boaters have been catching sanddabs, Dungeness crabs and an occasional halibut, while shore anglers are pursuing surfperch along the Monterey Bay shoreline. Anglers did well on the two days they were able to get out at the end of the season on the Kahuna sportfishing boat. “Anglers battled the weather today for the last day of the season,” said Carol of Kahuna Sportfishing. “Despite the conditions, 19 anglers landed limits of rockfish and 13 lingcod, including 3 treefish and 1 ocean whitefish. We are jumping into 2019 with hopes of good weather conditions and bountiful fish.” On their previous trip on December 29, the 25 anglers on the Kahuna landed 47 copper rockfish, 18 lingcod, 122 rockfish and 81 vermilion rockfish. Jones said the boat will be available for sanddab trips in January and then will going into the boatyard for the annual maintenance in February.
