TRINITY RIVER/LAKE cont.
Fish Hatchery, but the majority of guides
and anglers are focusing on the Chetco,
Smith, Eel Sacramento and other rivers.
A total of 1,395 adult steelhead have been
trapped at the Trinity River Fish Hatchery
in Lewiston to date. A total of 2,049 adult
steelhead returned to the facility in all of
2017.
The few anglers getting out are hooking
wild and hatchery steelhead while fishing
roe, jigs and nightcrawlers under a float and
flies, including Rubber Legs and golden
stone fly patterns. Fish to 8 pounds are
showing.
What fishing pressure there is remains
focused on the upper section of river from
Lewiston to Douglas City. There are very
few anglers fishing the stretch from Douglas
City down to Big Bar.
Fishing pressure at Trinity Lake remains
nearly nonexistent for smallmouth and
largemouth bass, rainbow trout and king
salmon. However, fishing for all four
species is expected to pick up as the
weather warms this spring.
Trinity Lake is holding 1,584,585 acre
feet of water, 65 percent of capacity and 92
percent of average.

WEST DELTA
With Fluctuating Water
Temperatures, It Takes Patience
To Hook Up
PITTSBURG- The water temperature has
gone from the high forties to the middle fifties
and back down to the low fifties over the span
of 10 days or so. While there are plenty of
sturgeon and stripers in the West Delta, these
temperature fluctuations have kept the bite
inconsistent. However patient anglers have
been hooking fish.
All in all, sturgeon are offering the best fishing
for anglers working between Rio Vista and the
Moth Ball Fleet. Shrimp baits, pile worms and
eel are the best baits at this time. The best
action has been coming in water that is 25 feet
deep or less. Some guys have been enjoying
success while fishing as shallow as 4 feet.
Many of the stripers being caught these days
are hooked incidentally by sturgeon anglers.
Grass shrimp have been the most consistently
productive striper bait, but if you want a
monster bass large live and dead baits are the
way to go.
With another round of storms approaching
the state West Delta anglers can look forward
to another big surge of outflow over the next
week or two. With all the fresh water flushing
the system, the months of March and April
promise outstanding fishing for both sturgeon
and stripers as the fish migrate upriver to
spawn with warming water temperatures.
Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon
Sportfishing has been boating
keeper sturgeon and is about to
begin targeting trophy size bass
with large baits. Mullins is looking
forward to an exciting spring
season with all the rain we’ve had.
Fish Sniffer field editor Stacy Barawed landed and released this
hefty 4 pound largemouth while fishing Oak Grove Regional Park on
January 29.
