LAKE CAMANCHE
Trout and Bass Pace Catches
BURSON – Rainbow trout remain the
main focus of anglers at Lake Camanche
as winter trout plants continue, but it was
a big bass that took big fish honors over
the past couple of weeks.
Igor Reigant caught a 9.4 lb. monster
largemouth bass during the Santa Clara
Bassbusters 2 day Lake Camanche
tournament. Igor said he got this giant
just 3 minutes before the end of the
tournament, reported Terry Willard of the
Lake Camanche Recreation Company.
Mt. Lassen planted on Friday, January
25, releasing 1,200 lbs. to the north lake
at the boat ramp. The next plant of 2,400
lbs. on February 1 went to the south shore
pond and the south ramp ,split evenly at
1,200 lbs. each.
Robbie Dunham of Koke Machine Guide
Service went scouting for rainbows this
week as he has three upcoming trips, and
he said, “After all of the rain and stormy
weather, I thought it would be a good idea
to try and find some fish. My wife, Kim,
joined me for a day of trolling Speedy
Shiners as we have been losing a number
of rainbows by running grubs.”
“We put on some miles in the open
waters from the Causeway to Big Hat to
the dam and Little Hat and even inside of
the cove north of Big Hat for 9 hookups
with all trout landed. It was a much better
hook up ratio with the spoons, and it was
fun watching them just crush the rods
over. We are working the top 8 feet, and
most of the fish were taken on planer
boards,” Dunham stated.
Regular Camanche troller, Mark Watzke,
said, “It was another productive day on
Lake Camanche with Scott Wood on
Saturday, but our day started off slow
with a lot of short strikes and zero fish
in the boat at 9:00 a.m. We pressed on
and covered a lot of water, scratching a
few fish in different areas, ending up with
limits of quality rainbows by 3:00 p.m.”

74% to 77% full since Jan. 12th with
an elevation of 221.573′. The lake was
receiving approximately 887 cfs. while
releasing 749 cfs. at the time of this
report. Pardee Lake was 91% full again at
the time of this report.
CLEAR LAKE
First Ever West Coast Crappie
Tournament Yields Big
Slabsides
CLEARLAKE – The first ever crappie
tournament held on the West Coast took
place on Saturday, January 26, a perfect
winter day featuring beautiful weather
and air temperature reaching 61 to 654
degrees.
The first place team of Jim Malm and
Joe Everett came to the scales with the
winning weight of 21.42 pounds for a ten
fish limit, and took home $1,000 for their
effort. They also had a 2.68 pound kicker
crappie, winning them $500 for big fish,
reported Ed Logan, owner of Limit Out
Bait and Tackle and tournament director.
Second place was the team of Dave
Burruss and Nathan Phillips, with a weight
of 21.06 pounds, winning $800. Paul
Kinney and Scott Gauthier took third place
with 20.36 pounds, winning $500.
Fourth place winners were Jay Strugnell
and Scott Strugnell with 20.34 pounds
for a $400 payday, and in fifth place were
Herbert Cornwell and Dale
Patton with 19.85 pounds,
winning $300.
The winner of the Dobyns
Specially Designed “Clearlake
Crappie Rod” for the
Husband/Wife division was
Allan and Karen Grossman;
and in the Junior Division
(under 16 yrs. of age) was
Brody Carrington.
The event was limited to
50 teams, with 23 teams
weighing in fish. The crappie
tournament produced feast or
famine results.
“Those that did well did really well, but
a lot of people didn’t do well at all,” said
Logan. “Most of the fish were caught in a
1-1/2 mile stretch of lake.”
Anglers mostly fished with jigs or small
swimbaits 7 feet under light bobbers. The
crappie were suspended over 25 to 30
feet of water.
Other anglers found success slowly
retrieving a Spro Phat Fly, while others
found success on 2.5 inch Keitech
swimbaits.
“This was a 100% payout, with a $60
entry fee,” said Logan. “All entry fees were
paid out at the ramp, during the award
ceremony. We had a 100% live release on
all fish weighed in.”
While many crappie tournaments are
held on the East Coast and in the Midwest
and South, this is the first-ever crappie
tournament held on the West Coast that
Logan is aware of.
“I ran hundreds of tournaments on the
East Coast and West Coast for many
years,” he said. “Now that I have retired,
I still love promoting tournaments. In
my events, I always make sure that the
fishermen make a 100 percent payback.”
The next tournament will be February
23rd, and will be held in Lakeport. To
sign up, call Clearlake Outdoors 707-
262-5852 or Lakeport Bait and Tackle
