32 March 1 - 15, 2019 VOL.38 • ISS. 6 SALTWATER REPORTS BERKELEY Sturgeon & Perch Offer Sport! BERKELEY - Charter boat fishing is right around the corner for East Bay anglers, but right now things are quiet with most boats at the shipyard for maintenance or moored in upper bay ports for sturgeon season. Private boaters and shore anglers have been enjoying some decent mid-winter action, mainly in the South Bay. There have been some sturgeon landed by anglers soaking herring fillets and shrimp baits in the extreme southern end of the bay and there have been a few reports of sturgeon being hooked along the channel edges offshore of Alameda. Overall the South Bay sturgeon fishing is fair at best and rated as slow most days. Moving on, perch action continues to slowly heat up off the East Bay Shore line. Most of the perch are shiners in the 1 pound class. Shrimp baits, including white prawns, and pile worms have been the baits of choice. In sheltered areas anglers are suspending their baits beneath bobbers, but a traditional Hi-Lo rigs are working best for anglers working open expanses of shoreline. While reports of stripers being caught have been few and far between, bass can be expected in catchable numbers for shore anglers within 4 to 6 weeks. BODEGA BAY Salmon Information Meeting Set for February 27 BODEGA BAY – The past two weeks haven’t been much different than the previous two along the Sonoma County coastline as the weather remains the main story. However, the effects of the wind, rain, and swell will pay dividends in the long run as the coastline is being reshaped, creating new pockets in the surf for perch while upwelling along the coast will provide food sources for the upcoming salmon season. Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing and the New Sea Angler was scheduled for a crab- only trip on Saturday, February 16, but a section of the dock was destroyed during the recent storms. CONTINUED ON PG 33 Sturgeon have been the target for anglers fishing San Pablo Bay aboard the Happy Hooker, but some quality stripers have been showing up too. This dandy bass was landed during a late January outing. Photo courtesy of HAPPY HOOKER SPORTFISHING, Martinez. Hit The Blue Water Aboard The Red Rooster III For Incredible Long Range Action!
