FRESHWATER REPORTS:
While the trout fishing is good now, it’s
going to get a whole lot better once the
flows lock in to a predicable rate and the
weather warms. Look for anglers to enjoy
spectacular action during the second half
of April and throughout May.
If you’d like a crack at some wild
rainbows in the Redding area when the
river drops back into shape, give Robert
Weese of Northern California Guide
Service or Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s
Guide Service a call. They are two of the
best sticks on the river and will work hard
to get you fish. To contact Weese, call
(530) 755-7196. To reach Mike Bogue,
dial (530) 246-8457.

REDDING/RED BLUFF
Sacramento River Ramps
Down to 10,000 CFW
REDDING - The Sacramento River
below Keswick Dam is fishing well
for trout anglers as the rate of flow
approaches 10,000 CFS. The average
rainbow is about 15 inches, but fish to 6
pounds are being caught. Despite this,
fishing pressure has been light.
Fly guys are using a variety of medium
to large size nymphs and mixing in some
egg imitations.
Gear anglers are using a combination
of cured roe, beads and small crankbaits.
Bead anglers are hooking the largest fish
while side drifting. Anglers back trolling
crankbaits are getting the biggest number
of hookups per outing because they are
able to cover a maximum amount of
water.
RIO VISTA - Striped bass action is
superb on the San Joaquin from Pirates’
Lair to Antioch. Netzel of Tight Lines
Guide Service reported two fish limits of
stripers while trolling deep-diving Yo-
Zuri lures on his recent trips, along with
releasing both undersized and legal-sized
fish.
“Thirty-two was the total count on
Monday, with 11 keepers to 7 pounds for 3
clients,” said James Netzel of Tight Lines
Guide Service. “We had to move around
a lot, but when we found fish spawning, it
was quick doubles and short strikes.”
The fishing was slower the next day,
but the 3 anglers fishing with Netzel still
ended up catching their limits, with the
largest fish (released) going 10 pounds.
The best lure colors have been
chartreuse, chartreuse/orange, candy and
silver and blue.
Alan Fong of the Fishermen’s
Warehouse in Sacramento reported
challenging largemouth bass on his latest
trip fishing in the North Delta slough
“The water was clean and warm at 59
degrees,” said Fong. “I thought that we
would load the boat, but it was a tough
bite with a few quality largemouths out
of the seven landed on spinnerbaits and
chatterbaits. The Senko bite was non-
existent.”

FREMONT – Regular trout plants
continue to keep rods bent at Horseshoe
Lake, located in the Quarry Lakes
Recreation Area.
The park district planted 750 pounds
of rainbows in Horseshoe Lake the week
of March 25-29 and another 750 pounds
the week of April 1-5. Anglers are tossing
out nightcrawlers, PowerBait, Rooster Tail
spinners., Mice Tails, Rapalas and other
offerings to entice the trout.
Big fish honors go to Peter S. of
Fremont caught his limit of trout, including
a seven-pound, four-ounce trout. He was
using different colors of PowerBait along
Fishermen’s Row.
Chelsea R. of Los Gatos also caught
a seven-pound, three-ounce trout using
a night crawler. She was fishing from
a boat heading toward the backside
of Horseshoe Lake., according to Joe
Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park
District.
Lionel S. of Union City landed a
beautiful seven-pound trout from the
backside of Horseshoe Lake!.
Andre M. of Fremont caught his limit of
trout, topped by a four pounder. He was
using Mice Tails along Fishermen’s Row.
Bernie H. of Milpitas reported catching
a six-pound trout and a one-and-a-half-
pound trout from his boat using “Bernie’s
Secret Bait.”

tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes. You
can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a
“1 for 1” trade for stainless steel weights.
