Folsom Lake King!
By Cal Kellogg
Outdoor shows, big editorial inserts for the Sacramento ISE Show and
the Sacramento Boat Show, contract negotiations and seemingly endless
rain kept me off the water this January and February, so when the
weather improved in early March I was more than ready to get the kayak
wet and put a bend in one of my rods!
Since the first trip of the year is typically part fishing trip and part
shakedown cruise, Wes Ward and I opted to stay close to home and hit
Folsom Lake.
I met Wes at Granite Bay’s big paved ramp at daybreak and we slid
our Hobie Kayaks into the water, rigged up our cameras and shoved off.
I’d been getting some reports of good rainbow trout action in the North
Fork, so we peddled out to the edge of the river channel, put our gear
into the water and turned left.
Up top I ran a large half ounce shad pattern Hum Dinger and on

That was it, with a big volume of water flowing into the lake and an equal
volume pushing out of the dam, the North Fork was flowing like a river. Later feet off the downrigger.
