FRESHWATER REPORTS:
CONTINUED FROM PG 11
FEATHER RIVER
Striper Bite Is On!
OROVILLE – Good number of stripers
are showing on the Feather River from
Star Rend to Verona, now that the
Department of Water Resources has cut
back the releases from Oroville Dam
On one trip on the Feather River,
Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service
reported 5 keepers and 5 shakers while
drifting jumbo minnows for him and his
friend Bob. “We used all of the minnows
we had. We only kept a couple of fish for
Bob’s dinner,” said Reimers.
Reimers launched out of Boyd’s Pump
and fished down to the mouth of the Bear
River for his fish.
Then on the next trip, Reimers quipped,
“Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy! It was
another awesome day catching limits on
the Feather River with 25 fish in all.”
Bank fishermen are also hooking some
stripers on the Feather. “Anglers are
hooking stripers while using pileworms
and bloodworms at Beer Can Beach,” said
Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoor Sports.
“The problem is that the water managers
keep changing the releases,” said Boggs.
“The fish are scattered. If you find them,
then the fishing can be very good for
stripers in the 4 to 6 lb. range. One guide
reported tough fishing one day and then
limits by noon the next day at Star Bend.”

FOLSOM LAKE
“Good water levels are
key, so keep watching
those,” he added. “The
weather’s getting better, but
keep in mind that Folsom
doesn’t heat up as fast as
other lakes might.”
Paganelli also said the
trout fishing should be
improving soon, but it
sounds like it may be hit or
miss right now.
Locating rainbow trout
and landlocked king salmon
has been tougher than
usual for Jerry Lampkin of
T.N.G. Motorsports Guide
Service.
“As we speak, I’m on all
of my regular super-duper
spots,” chuckled Lampkin,
“and NOTHING!” He and
his clients were using
nightcrawlers on top and

Fishing for Upper Klamath-Trinity River
Fall Chinook Salmon will be allowed in

above. Quotas and bag and possession
limits for Fall Chinook Salmon will be
adopted by the Commission in May
of this year. Steelhead fishing will be

allowed year-round with normal bag and
possession limits.
Along with its adoption of the emergency
regulations, the Commission also directed
CDFW to work with stakeholders,
including affected counties, fishing
organizations, Tribes and conservation
groups, to investigate options to allow
some Spring Chinook Salmon fishing in
2019.
Under Section of 2084 of Fish and
Game Code, the Commission can
consider hook-and-line recreational fishing
on a Candidate Species. CDFW was
scheduled to present the results of that
stakeholder collaboration and potential
options using Section 2084 at the
Commission’s next public meeting April 17
in Santa Monica.
The public may keep track of the quota
status of open and closed sections of the
Klamath and Trinity rivers by calling the
information hotline at (800) 564-6479.
LOS VAQUEROS
RESERVOIR
Hefty Rainbows Pace Derby
Catches
BYRON – Los Vaqueros is hosting its
annual spring Trout Fishing Derby from
April 1 through April 30. Anglers who catch
the three largest trout will win.
To date, the top three entrants are: (1)
Paul Vigil, with a 6.15 lb. trout measuring
23 inches long; (2) Luis Vazquez, with a
5.38 lb. rainbow; and (3) Jose Ordaz, with
a 4.88 lb. rainbow.
Trout fishing is the hottest prospect now.
“The lake is being planted every week
with trout, with Mt. Lassen stocking 1,000
pounds one week and the CDFW stocking
the next,” said Jeff at the Los Vaqueros
Marina. “Most of the fish are being caught
by shore fishermen on Power Bait in
South Cove.”
Big fish honors go to Jonah Abenoja of
Oakland, who landed a 6.02 lb. rainbow
while fishing PowerBait in Cowboy Cove
in late March. Ryu and Isaac also caught
their limits of trout on garlic PowerBait in
Howden and Cox coves.
Striper fishing has been challenging,
at least for keeper fish. “Anglers haven’t
landed a lot of keeper stripers on the
reservoir lately,” Jeff said. “The fish are
hitting best on anchovies fished from
shore.”
If you are looking to rent a boat, contact
the Marina ahead of time to check current
wind conditions at (925) 371-2628.

Plugging For Trout With Yo-Zuri Minnow Baits
F
or most of my fishing career when it came to
plugging for trout with minnow plugs whether
fishing a lake or river, I considered myself a Rapala
man. If I wanted a floater I went with a traditional
Rapala balsa wood minnow and if I wanted a
suspending bait, I’d tie on a Rapala Husky Jerk.
Over the past few years I’ve started relying more
and more on offerings from Yo-Zuri. Sure my
tackle kit still sports Rapalas, but the contingent of
Yo-Zuri’s seems to grow every season.
Yo-Zuri is known for turning out some of the
highest quality hard plastic baits available for
everything from bluegill to blue marlin.
Floating Pin’s Minnows are shallow
runners that feature a very tight hard
wiggling action. These plugs are very aerody-

with ease. I have
some in the 2-inch
size and several in the 2
3/4-inch size.
The L Minnow is a sinking
bait. It has a chunkier body than the Pin’s
Minnow and since they are heavier they cast
even better. The wobble on these baits is
wider and I suspect that they give on more
vibration. Since they sink you can count
them down and probe deeper pools and runs
than you can with a Pin’s minnow or floating
Rapala. I’ve got L Minnows in both the 1
3/4 inch and 2 5/8 inch sizes.
