18 FRESHWATER Apr 26 - May 10, 2019 VOL.38 • ISS. 10 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 17 PYRAMID LAKE cont. elsewhere recently, or they are very eager for a change of pace. Lou Varela of Reno related, “I am fishing Tahoe these days. I am kind of over Pyramid.” That sentiment seems to be on the lips of many. It is also at this time of year that a lot of fishermen from far off states and even other countries make their journey to the lake with a big cutthroat in mind. Chalk it up that the pressure can be high at your favorite beach. As April gives way to May, the spawning season will begin to yield, and the trout will actively go into the process of rebuilding their diminished bodies. This can be a great time of year for boaters to focus on very hungry trout as they transition into deeper cooler water. It’s also one of the best seasons to make a camping/fishing trip with stellar weather, clear skies and sometimes exceptional fishing. May and June don’t often dole out the biggest trout of the season, but the quantity of fish and low angler pressure can make up for it. - Mike McNeilly QUARRY LAKES Huge Trout Reward Anglers FREMONT - Rainbow trout continue to be the hot item at Horseshoe Lake in the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area, although the catfish and black bass bites should pick up as the weather warns up. On a rainy Friday morning, Paul H. of Hayward caught a seven-pound, one-ounce trout while fishing along Fisherman’s Row. He was using spring green and garlic PowerBait. Raymundo R. of San Jose caught an eight-pound, four-ounce trout while fishing with his friend from a boat along the swim beach area. Peter S. of Fremont caught a five-pound trout while fishing along Fisherman’s Row while using spring green PowerBait. Peter returned a few days later and caught a seven-pound trout in the same location, using the same bait. Four-year old Jack K. of San Jose caught a one-and-a-half-pound trout using chartreuse Power Eggs from the Peninsula. Anthony E. of Redwood Shores caught a seven-pound trout from Fisherman’s Row. Dexter M of Union City reeled in a six- pound trout from his kayak while using a Huge browns are on the chomp at Lake Almanor. This big fish was landed and released in early April. The latest plant of 1000 pounds of rainbows from the CDFW took place the week of April 8 to 12. REDDING/RED BLUFF Big Flows Lead To Excellent Wild Rainbow Action REDDING - The Sacramento River is running at a huge 30,000 CFS. You’d think that at that rate of flow, trout fishing would be shut down, but that’s not the case. When the clarity is decent the fishing has actually been outstanding. “The fishing is exceptional right now,” related Jason Thatcher of River Pursuit Guide Service. “When the flows get up to and above 25,000 CFS the trout fishing usually gets really good, provided the clarity is decent. The areas where the trout typically hold are blown out with current, so the fish are forced to move into areas where the flows reduce and that serves to concentrate the river’s rainbows and any steelhead that might be around.” “We are fly fishing exclusively and doing really well with egg imitations and a few different nymphs. Fish over 20 inches are common and we’ve broken off some fish that were much bigger. They may have been spring steelhead. Whatever they were, they bolted into the current and it was game over,” Thatcher quipped. While Thatcher is fly fishing exclusively, Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service and Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service are offering standard tackle trips for anglers that prefer working crankbaits, salmon eggs, roe and crickets.
