They also landed a wolf eel and a lingcod. Clara Ricabal of Boulder Creek was out on the opener on the six-pack, Pacific Fishing Alliance, with Captain Ross Corbett, and she struck pay dirt within the first hour of trolling with a quality 18-pound salmon. She reported a fish per rod for their anglers by mid-afternoon with high hopes for the coming tide change. The majority of private and party boats were south of the harbor at the Deep Reef, and Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete was among them. He said, “The water is green ,which is not particularly what we are looking for while targeting salmon, and our fish were loaded with some nice-sized anchovies. There were a couple of private boats with early limits. The Bay Area boats came down and looked for sign all the way down the coast, but nearly all of the action is at the Deep Reef. SANTA CRUZ – Salmon fishing in Monterey Bay was solid for anglers on opening weekend, April 6 and 7. Many private boaters reported catching limits and moochers did well also. The Kahuna in Moss Landing returned to the dock with 20 salmon for 20 anglers on opening day and 15 salmon for 20 anglers the following day. The anglers mooched with anchovies at 120 feet deep on the south side of the canyon, about 15 minutes from the harbor, said Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing. “There was a lot of action, with people losing lots of fish. The salmon averaged 8 to 12 pounds each,” said Jones. The boat didn’t get out again until Saturday, April 13. The 22 anglers aboard the boat that day landed 10 salmon.
