FLY FISHING REPORTS
EAST WALKER RIVER:
Fishing Slows A Bit With
Ramped Flows
Fishing has slowed down a little
because of higher flows. He also
said that contrary to rumors, he’s not
aware that the flows are going to be
cranked up soon. That being said
there are still fish to be caught and
stripping streamers along the edges
and dead drifting in the soft water
will get you some fish. There are lots
of fish in the river and adding a little
more weight will get the fly down to
their level. The NV side has warmer
water so that’s where you might want
to head to. Ken’s Sporting Goods has
had reports of Stoneflies crawling
about down there.
Paul spent April 16 flinging flies in
the Delta and caught several stripers
including this awesome fish.

Solid Fishing Prevails
Chris at the Troutfitter reports
that the road is now open into the
gorge all the way to the last parking
lot. Midges are hatching in the
morning with Baetis (BYOs) in the
afternoon. Mid-day is best and very
few fishermen are on the water.
Check road conditions either at the
Troutfitter or at Rick’s before you go
into the gorge.
A huge slug of fish are going to
be planted next week so the opener
should be great
providing the
flows don’t get to
high. Remember
that during high
flows the fish will
concentrate on the
edges so stripping
streamers can be
very productive.
Should the river
blow out, the local
streams can be
productive too. Try

Fly Fishing Destinations In Focus:
The Little Truckee
T
he Little Truckee is the central
Sierra’s little secret. Though it’s
larger sibling, the Truckee River gets
all of the attention in the national media
the Little Truckee can have some of the
most consistent fishing throughout the
spring, summer and fall.
Though the Little Truckee is called
a “river,” it actually resembles a large
creek and consists of a variety of
water from riffles and pools to pocket
water and flats. The geology of the
river bottom and surrounding area is
volcanic, which is typical of eastern
Sierra watersheds. In fact, the porous
nature of the volcanic rocks of the
river’s bottom contributes greatly to
its ability to host a huge variety of
aquatic insect’s which contribute to the
fertility that makes the Little Truckee
very attractive to trout.
The large variety of bugs, however,
can make fishing tougher as the fish
have lots to choose from and can get
quite finicky at times. The aquatic
life is typical of the east slope of the
Sierra. Blue Wing Olives, March
Browns and Green Drakes start off the
season then come the Pale Morning
Duns, Little Yellow Stones and Caddis.
