Boating Opens at Coyote,
Anderson Reservoirs
COYOTE – It was a long, rainy winter,
but the spring bass bite has shifted into
gear at Anderson and Coyote Lakes.
Even better news: Anderson, Coyote
Lake, Stevens Creek and Lexington
Reservoirs reopened to boating 7 days
a week beginning April 15, while Calero
remains open to boating.
All other reservoirs and bodies of
water in Santa Clara County are closed
indefinitely to all vessels and floats -
these include: Almaden, Chesbro, Sandy
Wool, Cottonwood, Grant, Guadalupe,
Uvas, and Vasona.
Anderson is currently producing
largemouth averaging 1 to 1-1/2 pounds,
with some larger fish mixed in. Boaters
are tossing out drop shot rigs with Robo
Worms in green pumpkin and other
natural colors, along with top water lures,
according to Madison Borgia at Coyote
Bait and Tackle.
For crappie, she suggested using mini

jigs and other small jigs in the shallows
around weeds and structure. The fish
average half to 1 pound each.
“Calero is producing good number of
largemouths in the 1 to 2 lb. range for
anglers fishing drop shot rigs, reaction
baits and jigs,” she tipped. “Crappie are
also hitting jigs.”
Likewise, Anglers are picking up a
mixture of bass at crappie at Coyote,
Uvas, and Chesbro reservoirs.

San Luis Reservoir. “Bait fishermen
are picking up the fish while drifting
jumbo minnows and frozen anchovies,”
Borgia added. “Casting umbrella rigs
and trolling jerkbaits and swimbaits is
also producing stripers. Bank fishermen
are catching fish on regular and jumbo
bloodworms in front of Portuguese
Cove and by the Trash Racks. The fish
average 15 to 25 inches long.”
Anglers are also picking up
stripers while fishing with pileworms,
bloodworms and shad in the O’Neill

today. As has been the case all winter into
spring, big weather changes tend to shut
down the trout. We caught some smaller
rainbows and managed to catch a nice
brown just after mid-day. Big changes
always present big challenges on Shasta,
but it looks like we are going to see some
really warm weather next week,” Goodwin
related.
“The lake is still rising so if you’re
launching your boat, bring your rubber
boots. I was welcomed once again to the
Packers Bay boat launch with no parking
lot lighting and a flooded dock ramp. Also,
rising water means more wood debris
heading back into the lake. Still some big
logs/big pieces of wood sitting right at the
water line. I found a nice sized log at 35
mph on my way in yesterday. A little chop
on the water makes them very hard to see
so be careful out there until we start to
see a drop in lake levels again,” Goodwin
cautioned.
On the bass fishing front, you can find
decent fishing on any of the lake’s arms
and in the main body. The spotted bass
are getting close to spawning so you’ll find
them near structure. Reaction baits work
at times, but soft plastics offer consistency
throughout the day.
One of the best areas has been in the
Pit River Arm below Arbuckle Flat. In that
area anglers are hooking big numbers of
spots to 3 pounds on tubes and Ned Rigs.
