A Quantum Smoke HD 200 Casting Reel
Is A Great Option for Striped Bass
O
ne of the fascinating things about chasing
striped bass at this time of year is that you
don’t know if you’re going to catch a three-pound
or a fifty-pound fish. If you happen to hook
that fish of a lifetime, using the right
reel could make the difference on
whether you land it or lose it.
I like the Quantum Smoke HD
200 for several reasons. It’s a great
casting reel and my go-to for glide
and topwater baits. This reel will also
not disappoint if you prefer using live minnows
or cut baits. The Quantum Smoke HD 200 reel has
The striper fishing reports were really
good from the San Francisco Bay all
the way up into the Feather River. I
decided to take my son, Andrew and
my daughter, Abby fishing during their spring break away
from school. They’ve fished countless times with me on the
Delta but we’re always casting lures such as swimbaits, lipless
crankbaits, topwater and even spoons. Andrew has fished the
river for stripers using live minnows but this was Abby’s
first time. Not only was it her first time fishing the river,
this was also the only time she’s fished with bait as she is
accustomed to casting lures, with a baitcasting reel.
The fishing reports on the Feather River have been
good, so I contact Rustic Rob Reimer’s Guide Service and
asked if Rob could take us fishing. I thought this would
be a great way to introduce Abby to a new technique of
catching stripers since we would be drifting live minnows.
Rob was willing, the date was set and as an added bonus, Dan
Bacher would be joining us.
As you know the river can get very crowded with boats at
this time of the year because fishing is great and everyone
wants a part of the action. I don’t blame them since we were
out there for the same reason. One
of the reasons I enoy fishing with
Rob is because he’s not afraid to
stay away from the other boats and
find other stretches of the river that
can be extremely productive. We
started at a spot and we were the
only boat in the area. It didn’t
take long for Abby to hook up
on the first fish which, was
a nice keeper size to get the
day started. Even though
this was not Abby’s first
fish she’d ever caught, it
was still special since she
was learning how to catch
a fish that she’s been
great line capacity with a smooth 25-pound
drag and it’s lightweight, weighing
only 6.9 oz, which makes it easy to
cast all day. I prefer the 7.3:1 gear
ratio however, the reel comes in a variety
of gear ratios that suit your personal
preference.
I highly recommend

suggest you give it a

catching for many years, with a new technique.
It didn’t take long for Andrew to hook up on his
first fish and get it in the boat. Another nice keeper
sized fish! Shortly after that, Dan hooked up on a
nice sized fish and then it was my turn. The action
was consistent for three straight hours with shakers
and keepers mixed in. Andrew had the big fish of
the day weighing in at 9 lbs.
The catching fish part of this trip was fun, but to
see Abby wanting to learn how to put the minnow
on the hook was even better. Seeing her learn the
difference between the sinker bouncing on the
bottom and a bite was amazing. The reason it was
so special to me was because I grew up fishing for
stripers while drifting live shiners and mudsuckers
on the San Francisco Bay and to see Abby fishing
the same technique was pretty cool.
It didn’t take long for other boats in the area to
notice we were on fish. Soon after,
Abby Marlan holding up a nice striper
several other boats started fishing the that she caught while fishing drifting
same drift that we were in. It seemed live minnows with Rustic Rob’s Guide

down, Rustic Rob didn’t stick around
long and moved on to find another group of fish. Throughout the day, just about
every move he made it produced a good fish or two.
By the time 10 a.m. rolled around, we had boated our tenth and final fish, giving
us our boat limit. What a fantastic day on the water! Amazing fishing, great
Captain, and for me the best thing was having the opportunity to make lifelong
memories with my kids.
If you are looking to have a great experience on the water and make lasting
memories, I recommend you give
