June 7 - 21, 2019 VOL.38 • ISS. 13 COVER STORY Lake Shasta is a true trout fishing Mecca. My nine-year-old son Drew Bundy caught his biggest trout ever this year at Shasta’s Spring Derby. However, the story started two weeks before the derby on an annual houseboat trip on Shasta Lake that the Brassfield family started decades ago. During that trip, I caught my biggest ever brown, a 5.3-pound fish. One day later, my fishing partner caught a 5.1-pound rainbow trout, the biggest rainbow of his life. We felt good going into the derby! For the derby Matt, Drew and I fished off my boat named “Bloodthirsty”. Matt and I struggled during the derby, but I was excited seeing Drew display his fishing skills. Drew loves picking out his own lures and always has justification for which one he picks. If he isn’t familiar with a lure he asked the name and what speed is best for that lure. Drew was paying attention to what depths were catching fish and always set his downrigger in the hot zone. He would pick his own lures, let his line out, hook to chamberlain releases (advanced skill), set his depth, crank the tension and always assisted with steering the boat so Matt and I could get our lines in as well. And then it happened… Drew put on a broken back Rapala and set his depth at 30 feet. A big 3.5-pound trout smashed his lure and surged into deep water. Drew fought it like a champ directing traffic to make sure that the fish was going to be landed. After an incredible fight, Drew won, and he landed the biggest brown trout of his life. He ended up in third place in his division in the derby. As a father, I couldn’t be prouder.
