Stockton Angler Wins Bear River Lake Trout Derby
oug McArthur of Stockton won
the annual trout derby held at Lower
Bear River Reservoir in the
Highway 88/Carson Pass
corridor on June 8 and 9 by
catching a 4.51 lb. rainbow.
McArthur landed the fish
while trolling with a small
rainbow trout pattern Rapala
just outside of the 5 mph
buoy as he was driving the
boat back towards the ramp.
McArthur won $700 for his
efforts.
The Bear River Lake Resort
stocked the lake prior to
their annual event with 1,000
pounds of trophy rainbow
trout averaging 4 pounds
each. The CDFW also planted
the reservoir in May with 1,000 pounds of
rainbows.
“The fishing on Friday and Saturday was
slow,” said McArthur, a member of the
Kayak City Fishing Team and owner of
Team Fishing Guide Service. “I
didn’t catch a thing either day.”
“On Sunday, I hooked a
small trout in the morning and
lost it at the back of the boat. I
turned around and trolled back
through the same area and got
another hit. The fish peeled out
lots of line as I put the boat in
neutral,” said McArthur.
“It was a 4.51 pound rainbow,
the only 4+ pound fish caught
all weekend at the lake,” he
noted.
“I lost my father to cancer
here on Father’s Day weekend
10 years ago, Even though I
was fishing by myself in the
boat, I think dad was riding along with
me,” he stated.
This was the first time he has won first
place in the
derby, although
he or another
person in his
boat took third
place twice.
“I still can’t
believe that I
won the derby. It
was amazing,”
McArthur added.
Larry Valder-
rama, also of
Stockton, won
second place
in the event by

Further up Highway 88,
Caples Lake has completely
thawed out. Shore anglers have
been catching lots of rainbows
while using white spinners and
worms from the shore and boats,
reported Andrew Peterson at
the Caples Lake Resort. Both
boat ramps at the lake are open
to launching and the marina is
open, with boats available for

Boaters are hooking some
mackinaw to 3 to 20 pounds
while using Rapalas and other
lures. “I caught a 5 lb. mackinaw

this week,” he said.
