trolling hoochies behind dodgers and
Speedy Shiners,,” said Newton. “The
rainbows are hitting at 30 feet deep, while
the kings are hitting deeper. Look for
the bait balls when you’re targeting the
salmon.”
“The trout fishing at Folsom has slowed
down, though the fish we are getting are
quality ones,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG
Motor Sports Guide Service. “My last
trolling trip produced four rainbows in
the 17 to 19 inch range. The previous trip
yielded 6 rainbows in the 16 to 17 inch
range for two fishermen.
“We trolled pink and white spinner
hoochies in copper/red and chartreuse/
chrome patterns and Speedy Shiners at
20 to 25 feet deep,” he stated.
Bass fishing reports from Folsom have
been scarce lately. Don Paganelli of Don’s
Bass Fishing Experience said the action
should be “really good” now for a mixture
of spotted, largemouth and smallmouth
bass. He recommended fishing the top 10
feet of water with swimbaits and tubes.
Folsom Lake is holding 923,533 acre
feet of water, 95 percent of capacity and
113 percent of the 10 year average. The
water level is 461.16 feet in elevation.

KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS
Spring Chinook Opener Set
for July 1
SACRAMENTO – Anglers are gearing
up for the opening of spring Chinook
fishing on the Klamath and Trinity rivers
on July 1. Few anglers have been out
fishing lately on the Trinity and Klamath
rivers, although you can currently fish for
species other than salmon on both rivers
now.
The Fish and Game Commission at its
April meeting voted unanimously to open
a short-term fishery on spring Chinook
Salmon on the Klamath and Trinity rivers.

on July 1 in both the lower Klamath and
upper Trinity rivers with a one fish bag
limit and two fish possession limit.
Spring Chinook Salmon became a
candidate for listing under CESA at the
Commission’s February meeting, when
emergency regulations were adopted that
closed salmon fishing on the Klamath and
Trinity rivers until August 15.
On August 15, the fall Chinook season
regulations will go into effect. The
Klamath River fall Chinook Salmon ocean
abundance forecast of 274,200 adults
allows anglers a daily limit of two Chinook
salmon, no more than one of which
may be greater than 22 inches, and a
possession limit of six, of which only three
may be greater than 22 inches
The Klamath River adult fall run Chinook
Salmon quota is 7,637 adults and the
season opens Aug. 15 and closes Dec.
31, while the Trinity River opens to salmon
fishing on Sept. 1 and closes Dec. 31.
Seasons and areas with defined sub-
quotas are subject to closure once the
quota is reached in each subsection.

repeated the course of the first day. The
bite was much slower, and the fish were
smaller today. We had about 10 fish by
noon when the wind turned around to
the east and really started to blow!! We
headed out to 40 feet of water and started
catching fish again. We caught several on

BYRON – Trout fishing has tapered off
at Los Vaqueros Reservoir with the arrival
of warmer water temperatures, so striped

action for anglers using anchovies and

Albert and Desiree Attiya caught two

ANGELS CAMP – New Melones
remains very popular with northern
California kokanee fishermen, and the
lake has been inundated with boats vying
for the landlocked salmon every day of
the week. The water levels continue to
rise, and there are huge logs, trees, and
even two huge Euclid tires floating on the
surface of the lake along with heavy grass
under the surface.

downriggers from 15 to 25 feet deep – the
trout were all over the water column. We

Sunday Gary and Brian and I went out
again, and now the wind was blowing
from the south. It calmed down a couple
of times, but by 9 am it was blowing
a good 25 mph and creating a wash of

warming weather. “One angler landed a
20 lb. lb. catfish just as the marina was
closing the other evening,” said Travis
at the Los Vaqueros Marina. “Catfish
are hitting anchovies and other baits the
little hidden coves on the way to Cowboy
Cove.”
Big fish honors go to Luis Vasquez, who
caught an 8.4 lb. catfish on an anchovy in
Cowboy Cove.
“Trout fishing is best right off the
pier for anglers using Power Bait and
nightcrawlers,” he said. “However, Junior
Quintero of Oakland caught an 8 lb.
rainbow while using cut anchovies in the
South Cove.”
“One guy came in with four trout today,”
Guddal added. “The fishing is fair for
trout. The water is getting warmer, so we
haven’t planted for a couple of weeks.”
Francisco Humberto caught a 10.5
lb. trout on PowerBait on the rock wall.
Aurelio Alvarado landed a 9.15 lb. trout on
PowerBait in South Cove. Limuel Legados
caught a 6.9 lb. trout on PowerBait by the
marina.
