The top offering has been an orange,
olive or brown fly trolled around 1 mph.
If fly trolling isn’t your bag, you can slow
troll with Sure Catch spoons, Thomas
Buoyants or Needlefish. Orange colors
are working well.
If you like to troll faster don’t hesitate
to experiment with Speedy Shiners and
Rapalas in orange, perch and brown trout
patterns.
Fly anglers are finding some surface
activity and hooking up with midge
imitations. If the fish aren’t up top, try
working a No. 10 bead head black or olive
Woolly Bugger.
Looking ahead, trollers can expect
the bite to get very good as the
water temperature rises and the trout
concentrate in deep water areas. When
that happens spoons such as Needlefish,
Speedy Shiners and Ex-Cels typically
produce great results.
If you plan on taking your RV to Eagle
Lake this summer or fall be sure to ask
the folks at the Eagle Lake RV Park about
the Fish Sniffer special.
No RV, no problem! Dave at Heritage

available both large and small. Heck you
can even rent The Fish Sniffer’s Paul

EAST DELTA
It’s Frog Time on the Delta
STOCKTON - It’s summertime in
the Delta, and that means recreational
boating is in full swing while the bulk of
the fishing action is on the slower-moving
San Joaquin side of the Delta,
The arrival of the annual specialty frog
tournaments is on the horizon, and a
number of Delta angler are gearing up
for the tournaments. The Ultimate Frog
Challenge is in late July out of Russo’s
Marina, and the original frog tournament,
the Snag Proof Open, is the following
weekend, August 3/4, also out of Russo’s
Marina on Bethel Island.
Dan Mathisen of Dan Mathisen
Outdoors has been working frogs
primarily in preparation for the upcoming
tournaments, and he said, “I am forcing
the action right now to get ready, but
punching, plastics on the drop-shot, and
spinnerbaits in the wind are all working.
“I have been finding striped bass from
Eddo’s upriver to Holland Tract with
chatterbaits or spinnerbaits for linesides
to 26 inches, but if I was targeting them, I
would use either an Optimum Bad Bubba
Shad swimbait or a River2Sea SWaver.
There are tons of golden shiners in the
river right now,” said Mathisen.
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor,
took a father and 12-year old son out for
two days of fishing with the first day at
New Melones and the second in the Delta.

TNG Motor Sports Guide Service. “The
rainbows hit chrome/chartreuse Speedy
Shiners at 25 feet deep, while the king hit
the same lure at 50 feet deep.”
“On my next trip, the two anglers fishing
with me landed two rainbows in the 17
inch class. Again, all the trout would hit
was Speedy Shiners.”
Lampkin is planning to head to Klamath
to pursue spring run Chinook salmon on
the Klamath River, which opened on July
1.
Any time you fish Folsom Lake you have
the possibility of hooking a quality king
salmon. For example, Raz Ortiz landed
a 7 lb. 4 oz. king while trolling a white
Radical Glow tube at Folsom near the
dam.
Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro
Tackle confirmed the tough bite for salmon
and trout at Folsom.
“Boaters are picking up salmon up to
5-1/2 pounds while slow rolling shad down
at 55 feet deep,” noted Pfanner. “Anglers
are landing holdover rainbows while
trolling with nightcrawlers on lead core line
in the South Fork and off Beals Point.”
Folsom Lake is holding 920,266 acre
feet of water, 94 percent of capacity and
114 percent of average. The water level is
460.86 feet in elevation.

KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS
Spring Chinook Fishing Open
Now!
SACRAMENTO – The recreational
Chinook Salmon fishery opened on
portions of the Klamath and Trinity rivers
on July 1, as per emergency fishing
regulations that have been adopted and
approved by the California Fish and
Game Commission and the state Office of
Administrative Law.
The spring Chinook Salmon fishery
is open from July 1 through Aug. 14 on
the lower Klamath River (downstream
of the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec)
and from July 1 through Aug. 31 on the
Trinity River (upstream of the confluence
of the South Fork). The daily bag limit has
been set at one Chinook Salmon (no size
restrictions), and the possession limit is
set at two Chinook Salmon.
The fall Chinook fishery will open Aug.
15 in the Klamath River and Sept. 1 in
the Trinity river. The basin in-river quota
is 7,637 adult Chinook Salmon for 2019.
Regulations will remain the same as in
2018 with a two-fish daily bag limit, with
no more than one fish over 22 inches
(such as one adult and one jack). The
possession limit remains the same at six
fish, with no more than three fish over 22
inches (effectively three daily bag limits).
The in-river recreational adult fall
Chinook quota is divided among four
sectors in the Klamath River Basin:
