Trollers Nail Chinook Limits
OROVILLE – If you want to catch a limit
of hard-fighting Chinook salmon, now’s
the time to hit Lake Oroville.
“The salmon fishing is really good at
Lake Oroville,” said Bret Brady of Bare
Bones Guide Service. “The fish are
ranging in size from 14 inches up to 4
pounds.”
“We’re doing best while trolling white
and green hoochies at 1.8 to 2.5 mph,”
noted Brady. “We’re fishing at the Bidwell
Canyon Bridge, Potters Cove and other
areas on the lake.”
Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide
Service also reported limits of Chinooks
on his latest trolling adventure at Oroville.
“Two anglers caught their limits from 16
to 18 inches with one 19-1/2 inch Brad’s
Cut plugs in the Gold Diver Down. We
were fishing around the Bidwell Canyon
Bridge both sides. They quit at 10 a.m.
We landed most of our fish at 35 to 45
feet deep trolling at 1.8 to 1.9 mph. The
water temperature was 74 degrees.”
“Fellow guide Gary Anderson and I
caught our limits of salmon, topped by a
21.5 inch holdover. The old Kokanee Cut
Plug in the Gold Diver Down color kicked
butt again,” he explained.
While most anglers are concentrating
on the Bidwell Canyon area, other anglers
are finding success while trolling in the
Limesadde area.
Lake Oroville is holding 3,397,362 acre
feet of water, 96 percent of capacity and
115 percent of average. The lake level is
891 feet in elevation, nine feet from full.
The Thermalito Afterbay is the top spot
in the Oroville area for largemouth bass,
while Lake Oroville is the top sport for
spotted bass.
Rick Warren and Logan McDaniels tied
for 1st with 18 1/2” fish in a recent turkey
shoot at the afterbay, reported Jamey
Sorenson of North Valley Tackle and Pro
Shop. Second was also a tie with 18”
between Eva Mayfield and Rich Bryce.
Third was Rob Ponciano with 17-1/2”.
